Bought this to use with my Van Stahl surf reel chasing fresh water strippers and musky. Balances well, throws heavy lures with ease and has enough backbone to get them to the boat. Comes as a two piece so easy transport. Will work well on tarpon.
Pros
  • Cost, transport and casting
Cons
  • None

I purchased this rod blind never seeing it. I can't be happier with the rod. The rod is light weight and well balanced. The fast action is stiff but still has lots of play.
Pros
  • Stiffer than most fast action rods. Well balanced. Looks good.

Worth every dollar

I used this rod as my light surf rod. I used it extensively on a recent trip to Florida making a couple thousand casts.
Pros
  • Like all St. Croix products I found this rod to have a nice smooth action and fell great in my hand as it was lightweight and well balanced.
Cons
  • I dislike that this rod is made for 8 - 12 lb test. I would like this rod in a 10 -15 or 12 - 17 lb model burt that is my preference. I feel the lure weight rating should be increased as I easily cast lures up to 2 oz. while putting maximum loading into my casts.

I'm looking for a 2 piece inshore spinning rod for smaller striped bass and bluefish. Will be using lures in the 1oz range and primarily fishing from shore. Would theAVS86HF2 be the best fit? Other than rinsing the rod off with freshwater after any saltwater use do I need to take any other precautions?
1 Answer
Hello Ben, Yes that rod would work. The normal care after use will be fine.

What reel size would be suggested for the AVS96MLF2
1 Answer
Depending on the reel you choose, a 4000 or 5000 size reel would most likely balance the best with the 9' 6.

will this rod hold up in saltwater ?
1 Answer
This rod is designed with freshwater fishing in mind. However, it would hold up to saltwater use so long as it is properly taken care of. We suggest always lightly rinsing off your equipment with freshwater after every saltwater use.
