A really great rod

I use this rod for surf-casting for stripers on the West Coast. It can toss a SPMinnow a mile and also handle a 2-3/8 oz. Super-Strike popper or a 3/4-oz. hair-raiser. I've paired it with a Avet SXJ-MC for super reliability in the rough conditions. A really great rod.

I was so pleased with my recent purchase of a St. Croix AVC90MHF2, I wanted to add another rod from this series to my arsenal. This rod is an absolute joy to cast. I was able to get it out to the beach this weekend to give it a test run. I have this rod paired with a Daiwa Lexa 300HS. This rod had no problem putting a 7/8 ounce swim shad into the strike zone. I think this rod could comfortably handle a 1 1/2 oz. lure. To be fair, this rod wouldn't be my first choice when it comes to plugging for striped bass along the beach, particularly if there's larger fish around. However, I specifically purchased this rod for the late fall into winter season, when the larger fish have gone and schoolies rule the roost. The light weight of this rod, coupled with its outstanding overall quality, make working the beach with sand eel imitations and very light tins an absolute joy. While this rod may have been designed for freshwater use, it will definitely serve its purpose well as a light tackle saltwater rod.
Pros
  • Outstanding St. Croix quality. Can easily put a lure into the strike zone off a beach. Beautiful finish on the rod, and the cork handle not only looks great, but it's rather comfortable in the hands. Rod also comes with a hook holder....a definite plus.
Cons
  • Not a one..

Love it!

After looking at various surf rods for summertime, light tackle surf fluking, I decided to go with this rod. I wanted something that was 9ft, and excelled at throwing bucktails in the 1/2 - 1 oz range. This rod is a perfect fit for such an application. This rod is light, and casts like a dream. Two very important qualities for working a beach for fluke, as you'll probably be doing quite a bit of casting. I have it paired with a Daiwa Tatula Type R, spooled with 15lb. power pro. Can't wait 'till next summer to hit the beaches for some Fluke. This lightweight combo will definitely be my surf fluking go to.
Pros
  • Lightweight, and loads great with 1/2 to 1oz bucktails. Overall look and feel of this rod is outstanding. A high quality St. Croix product.
Cons
  • None
