Spyderco's Rescue knives are long favored by seafarers and the design has since been embraced by rescue workers, EMT's and ranchers-anyone cutting around flesh in an emergency. Now available in a rustproof version, the Atlantic Salt is a modified Rescue made with state of the art non-rusting H1 steel. H1 is a precipitation-hardened steel containing nitrogen insteadof carbon, which cannot rust. The hollow-ground blade is available PlainEdged orSpyderEdged with both configurations offering remarkable cutting performance in and around fresh and saltwater. Textured with a Volcano Grip pattern, the molded fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) handle comes in black or visible marine yellowequipped with a reversible titanium pocket clip for right or left- handed use. We recommend threading a thong or lanyard cord through the lanyard hole for back-up retention around water, where once dropped, a knife is often irretrievable or lost.

Spyderco Pacific Salt C91 Knife
A big myth in the knife world is that out there somewhere is a knife that seriously cuts but cannot rust. Myth became reality with new H1 steel. H1 is a precipitation-hardened alloy with .1% nitrogen, that acts like carbon in the steel matrix, but doesn't react to chlorine making rust.Pacific Salt model reaches a Rockwell hardness of 57-58rc. The blade's hole is enlarged to 14mm for easier opening/closing with gloved, wet or cold hands. Textured in a checkerboard pattern, the yellow FRN handle has a grippy texture and is fitted with a reversible metal pocket clip which positions for right-handers and lefties. The addition of a lanyard hole offers a backup method of attachment (thong or lanyard cord) for use around water where once dropped, a knife is often lost or elusively hard to retrieve.

almost 20 years in the salt

Bought the Spyderco H-1 Salt almost 20 years ago now for a utility knife in the salt. It stays clipped to my reel bag and comes out when I need it. It's been in my kayak hold for almost 20 years of salt trips. Still sharp as the day I bought it. Still the only high-hardness stainless tool that has never rusted. The mechanism is slick and just needs a little Boeshield cleaning every few years. Kinda funny, though, the H-1 stamp on the blade develops a rust film - certainly because of metal transferred from the tool steel stamp. That's OK, Boeshield cleans that, too.
I'm a metallurgist and licensed professional engineer. Sypderco's H-1 is the stuff if you want to take it to the salt.
Pros
  • H-1 nitrogen-strengthened stainless blade holds edge and stands up to salt
