I know drift and current will be a factor, but is there a general rule for the number of feet one is fishing in relation to the weight of the sinker?

All of the factors you mentioned come into play when choosing the correct weight. General rule is to use the lightest weight you can get away with your current conditions.

All of our deep drop cylinder weights are approx. 1.5" in diameter. They are meant to be able to fit into a standard rod holder. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
