Overall this is a solid real. It holds a decent amount of line, very durable, easy to service, and casts beautifully. My only real dislike of the reel is how the gearbox drops below the reel seat of whatever rod you pair it with. It is clunky and forces me to hold the reel differently when I cast. It’s not the end of the world but I would look at some of the other diawa reels before purchasing this one.

Great reel. I use it a Shimano Terez 7 ' MH. Great combination.

Just landed a 50# yellowfin at Cabo. No problem with tunas and dodos. Been using for 5 seasons, I like the reel with the Shimano rod because it is light yet strong, Landed over 80 tunas with this combination. Reel loaded with 50# 150 yds of braid and top shot of 30# floro. I use a long section of floro because it eliminates a extra knot, better sink, and smaller diameter floro. Been fishing in baja for over 30 years. This is my go combo to for small sardines and cut squid.
Pros
  • I like this combination because it handles easier then my Daiwa Saltist 2 speed and Calstar custom rod. I believe the lighter weight contributes to better feel with bites. The boat caption calls my combo the "lucky: rod...
Cons
  • The original drag for really large tuna is inadequate. I replaced the drag washers with carbon washers and cal's grease. Now got plenty of drag. With tunas over 50 lbs it will take a really long time to bring in. I have had 2 tunas estimated to be 80 lbs+ that i broke of after 1 1/2 hrs. I got impatient and locked the reel down.

Do everthing inshore kayak reel

I use these reels specifically for kayak fishing. They get pretty abused going through the surf zone, and I have dunked them overboard a few times, yet they keep working. Just make sure you get them serviced each year.

Great reel

This is the second SL30SH I've purchased and I've enjoyed this reel. It came highly recommended by a friend who has used them for years. It can backlash pretty bad when casting, definitely install the largest brakes when learning to cast it. It's an all around great reel.
