Do yourself a favor and buy Van Staal pliers...

They look cool, but they fell apart during a fishing tournament. That's kinda when I needed them. Simms replaced them with a brand new pair, and they fell apart again. I'm all set. Spending this kind of money, I expected more. Now, my rule is that I only buy the best of the best, so my equipment doesn't fall apart. Century, Loomis, St. Croix Legend, CTS, Van Staal, Saltiga and Yeti...
Pros
  • They looked cool
Cons
  • Fell apart twice. Screws to replace jaws are some weird style of allen wrench that I would have to buy online. How about a Torx 20? Then at least I could tighten them. Oh, and the carbide cutters sucked wind after 8 hours of fishing, maybe 20 cuts max... Simms makes good stuff, but it's back to the drawing board with these...

This is more of a table top review, once I saw that the plier jaws don't shut fully, I decided to return and therefore didn't bring them out into the field. Bottom line is that at this price point they should operate flawlessly. As I mentioned above I haven't used them for any period in the field so I cannot speak to their durability or corrosion resistance.
Pros
  • Pliers fit snugly in sheath. Lightweight with sturdy grips. I like the cutter position on the outside. I like the line channel that allows you to tighten knots. Great look.
Cons
  • Slight lateral play in main bearing. Jaws do not close fully unless you grip them strongly. Cutter closes fully though. No lanyard included. Some movement in the grips when strongly gripping.
