Engineered for surf casters who value casting distance over anything else, the Shimano Ultegra XSE Spinning Reel is the ultimate surf fishing reel for launching baits well past the breakers. These feature-packed spinning reel utilizes unique technologies to help angers cast further than ever before. Returning from previous generations of Ultegra surf reels is Shimano's Super Slow 5 Oscillation technology. This technology dramatically slows the spool oscillation to deliver an extremely even line lay to virtually eliminate the crisscrossing of line as it wraps around the spool. This technology, combined with the super elongated spool design, allows line to evenly flow off the spool during a cast with much less line turbulence going through the guides. This process reduces friction that creates drag on the weight or lure, slowing it down and thus shortening the cast. Making its debut in the surf reel category is Shimano's Infinity Drive technology, which enhances fish-fighting performance by increasing winding power by as much as 30% when under a heavy load. The ultra-rigid CI4+ body reduces flex and provides a lightweight yet solid foundation for better meshing of the cold-forged HAGANE Gear. Together, these unique features translate to exceptional smoothness and long-lasting gear durability. For added toughness in unforgiving saltwater environments, Ultegra XSE utilizes X-Protect labyrinth construction for increased water resistance. Where ever your surf fishing adventures may take you, the Ultegra XSE provides the benefits of longer casts and enhanced reliability that anglers along any coastline can appreciate.

Excellent Spinning Reel

The Shimano Ultegra XSE is perhaps the finest spinning reel I own. I have it paired with a 12’ Shimano Speedmaster surf rod, and that combo means super-long casts. The reel is smooth as silk with precision drag adjustment. I highly recommend this reel.

Great long cast spinner
April 29, 2022
I use this as my high surf distance reel. Paired with a high performance rod, it'll put a competent caster within range of anyone else on the beach. I'm a decent caster, but not even remotely elite, and I have gotten comments on the distance this reel can achieve. In terms of fish fighting ability, it has a nice drag and doesn't feel underpowered. It's a fishing reel, not a tournament caster, so I appreciate that it is actually able to put some pressure on a fish. Line lay is great, right out of the box.

The only negative that I experienced was with the knob - I expect a little more at this price point. The handle itself is nice, but it is capped off by a cheap little plastic T-handle. Perhaps there was a reason to put on such a minimalist handle (casting inertia or something), but I replaced it with a machined aluminum knob and haven't had any issues with the bail closing mid-cast or anything. Was quite easy to swap the knob.

What is the difference difference between the Ultegra XSE and the Ultegra XTC reels?
1 Answer
Hi Manny, According to Shimano, The XSE has everything the XTC model has but adds the following: Hagane gearing, Infinity drive, Rigid cast, S a-rb bearings, and Silent Drive technology. This ultimately results in the XSE model being a lighter, smoother, quiet, and stronger reel under heavy loads making it ideal for a variety of fishing applications. Are these reels sealed? Marketed as a surf reel but Shimano doesn't go into much detail on the corrosion resistance or seals. Wondering how they will hold up when compared to a Penn Spinfisher VI LC.
1 Answer
Hi Jacob, According to Shimano, The Shimano Ultegra XSE Surf Spinning Reel features X-Protect for increased water resistance and does have some sealing inside the reel but it is not considered fully sealed. This would hold up well in the surf as long as the reel would not be submerged or dunked and proper rinsing after every trip in order to prevent corrosion. Is this the best and longest casting spinning reel Shimano makes? I own many Shimano Stellas and sustains but neither cast very far.
1 Answer
Hello Jack,

This reel is made for the surf and excels at casting for distance due to the elongated spool. Pair this reel with power pro v2 super slick braid for the best casting experience.
