Shimano developed the Torium reel by borrowing from lessons learned from the development of their acclaimed Trinidad series of reels. Shimano Torium (non-levelwind) reels are durable, high-speed reels that cast well and have been designed for years of comfort and ease of use. Shimano Torium reels incorporate many of the features folks have been asking for - without the high price tag.
Shimano Torium Reel Features
  • High Speed 6.2:1 Gear Ratio
  • Super Stopper With Assist Stopper
  • Die-Cast Aluminum Frame

Land Based Game fishing Rarotonga
December 3, 2017
Great reel for casting big baits and fishing for GT's in Rarotonga, but i am guessing the reel was never made for that so it does well considering.

24kg mono

could do with a bit more drag on the next version ( but that is just me )
Pros
  • Large line capacity - can cast 50m land based with 24kg mono
  • good drag, good retrieve ratio
Cons
  • scratches easy - but its not a big deal.

Great heavy duty reel for bigger fish
December 2, 2017
Holds a lot of line, even spooled with 50. Only necessary for the bigger varieties greater than 40pound fish to 100pound. For smaller Tuna take the Torium 30 - its a better and lighter caster. This is a bigger reel - single speed star drag make sure you relocate the handle to the extended position since it is shipped in the tighter position and you wont get a good enough crank on a big fish.
Pros
  • very powerful and great for flat falling bigger jig on heavy line
Cons
  • big and heavy not the best for casting distance. Also no trolling rings. Take the Tyrnos for trolling

Great Affordable Reels

We have a hand full of the Torium 30's. They are spooled with 80lb braid, and have a 25' top shot of mono. They are great reels for the money, plenty of stopping power, and the clicker is strong enough for freelining to blackfin tuna and king mackerel.
Pros

  • Performance
Cons
  • Finish scratches easily

Great bottom fishing reel...
July 21, 2014
As an avid Shimano user, I do have a tendency to be bias during these reviews. Rest assured, I do speak my mind about a product either positive or negative. With this all said, this reel is hands down one of the best reels I have had the pleasure of using!

I primarily use this reel for targeting deep water offshore bottom species. And always jig. This reel is light enough for me to be able to jig all day, every day during a 2 day offshore trip, without me needing Tylenol! Smooth drag and great gear ratio let's me rip my jigs through the water and boat a fish with ease in 300' plus! I have it matched with a Trevela F Butterfly Rod.

If you are not a big fan of the lever drag reels fishing offshore, than this is the reel for you. I would recommend this reel to anyone that prefers star drags and fishes offshore.
Pros
  • Great price, smooth drag, light weight, versital, ability to fish deep water wreck/reef fishing
Cons
  • Would like to see Shimano offer a larger power handle

Good reel
May 28, 2014
I use a Torium 30 for deep dropping tilefish and seabass. The reel is perfect for this. I give this reel a 4 star because they are known for the internal gearing to lockup/break. I have owned 2 of these for the last 4-5 years and only one of them had this problem. I had to have a tackle shop replace the gearing. They told me that this happens sometimes to the Toriums. Besides that...the reel is perfect for what I want it to do.
Pros
  • Good for the price
Cons
  • possible gearing issues

shimano torium 50

This is an great reel when targeting big fish as sharks and rays. It is a very big reel with a huge line captivity, complimented with dartanium drag washers. This gives you the pulling power to crank in that fish of a life time. It cast like a dream and give now problems with its heavy spool when casting. It has a slow gear ratio of 4.9:1 but is a great advantage when fishing huge strong fish.

What rod do you rcomend for the Torium 20 for regular party boat fishing and some casting. 80 to 120 dollars?
1 Answers
Take a look at these 2 rods; PEN-0982 is a 7' 1 piece rod, rated 15-25# line. SHM-0204 is a 6'6" 1 piece medium action jigging rod rated for 30-80# test. Either would be great choices.

I would like to use this reel for blackfish on an NJ party boat. Would this reel be a good choice and which model would you suggest

The Torium 16 would work out best. It gives you more drag and faster line retrieve than the 14.

IS A SHIMANO TURIUM 16 REEL A GOOD MATCH WITH A SHIMANO TREVALA 6' 6" MEDIUM FAST 30 - 80 LB BRAID ROD FOR DEEP WATER FLUKE FISHING?
1 Answers
Yes, this is a great combo for deep water fluke fishing. With a high gear ratio of the Torium and the backbone of the Trevala this combo would be great for pulling some good fluke from the deep.

this reel like its other bother the Trinidad, as definitely great for surf fishing, as we use these reels in south Africa for rock and surf, and its been tried and tested and comes out tops time and time again. you will see most surf fishermen use these reel and swear by them. i use this reel together with my blue marlin G3 rod 4.2m, and its awesome for fighting aswell as casting. While it may not have been designed specifically for surf fishing, I personally find that the Torium 30 is capable of casting well over 100 yards and past the breakers (with 30#-40# line).
