The new Shimano Tiralejo Surf Spinning Rods are made with the all new Shimano C4S blank construction which utilizes high modulus blank and wraps 4 outer layers of 90 degree graphite. The C4S construction is a unique design that uses Carbon "C" a 4 layer process "4" and slit carbon tape "S" while using high modulus carbon "HM". THe rod is wrapped with an inner and outer layer of carbon tape over two layers of carbon pre-preg. This design significantly increases the strength of the rod but more importantly increases the recovery rate which in turn allows you to cast farther and more accurately as it helps eliminate blank twist when put under a heavy load. This new rod construction will increase the hoop strength for maximum pulling power without inhibiting the sensitivity.

  • Custom long cast concept guide spacing
  • Fuji stainless steel frame with alconite inserts
  • Black shrink tube grip
  • Fuji DPS reel seat

Not the same quality anymore!
July 14, 2022
Tiralejo Surf Rods has been a workhorse for surf fishermen. I have been using Tiralejo for many years. Just received the new 9 ft 6 inch version in April 2022, fishes a few times and the epoxy is cracked at the joint section. Sent it back for warranty and Shimano declined the warranty. Shimano claimed that a big fish was caught and the joints were not inserted tight. See photos, rod is only a month old, fished a few times and caught gator blues.
Pros
  • 9 ft 6 inch version at $310
  • Good action and cast lures very far.
Cons
  • Not as durable as Shimano used to make the Tiralejo, quality went down hill, not worth $310 for a month and a few times of use.
  • Very surprised Shimano denied the warranty claim.
  • Extremely bad craftsmanship, or cheap epoxy finish coat.
  • Better quality and value with ODM or Lami.

I own two 12 foot tiralejo surf rods that I regularly take to Cape Hatteras. They have never let me down. One of them has a 6500 bait runner and the other has a Saragosa. Both reels are spooled with braid. They are sensitive enough to feel a puffer fish bite and strong enough to catch a 7 foot shark. They can handle everything the surf can throw at them. One bit of advice. If you are using braid with a mono or fluorocarbon leader I would use a double uni knot or a knot where the tag end of the mono or fluorocarbon is toward the reel. If the tag end is facing the tip it will get caught in the guides and get tangled. Don’t use an Albright knot, you will get frustrated. This is a great rod and it’s very durable and light.
Pros
  • Strong, casts great, light, very nice taper.
Cons
  • Don?t use an Albright knot.

I purchased the 12' Medium-Heavy 2-6 oz to throw 3-4 oz sinkers with bait to catch Pompano and Whiting in FL. I paired it to one of my Shimanos Ultegras 5500 Ci4+. Here are my initial impressions. The rod is very light (17oz) and does cast very far, I got at least 80-100 yards on my casts using 25-ft of shock leader (mono 30-lb) and Powerpro braid 15-lb as main line plus a double dropper rig with sandleas/clam and a 4oz sinker Compared to my other rods, Carolina Cast Pro 13' 3-6 oz, it is a stiff rod and when you hammer it, you feel the recoil back to your body, may be I have to adapt my casting style but I did not like the recoil from the rod recovery. As far as sensitivity, the tip could be softer to aid in bite detection (when sitting on the sand spike) and to aid when reeling the fish (to prevent ripping off the hook off the mouth of my target fish). However, I was able to catch 3 Pompano my very first time with this rod. In terms of the craftsmanship and finish, I was not impressed at all. The guide wraps are well done but nothing that screams top of the line, the transitions between the but cap or reel seat to the rod blank are very austere (may be to save weight? no ring or beveled epoxy from butt to blank and a flat ring between reel seat and blank). It does not have any cushioned coasters or wrapping above/below the reel seat to make fish fighting more comfortable, just rubber flock covering the blank. I would say the overall finishing is comparable to rods that are half the price. The butt rubber cap is Pack bay, seat and guides are Fuji. The action of the rod may be more fast than the advertised moderate-fast. Last, the tip top guide is a size 8 which in my opinion may add friction when you use a thick 30-lb mono shock leader. My other distance rods have a tip top ring size 10. Overall a nice rod that gets the job done.
Pros
  • Excellent blank
  • Casts far
Cons
  • Finish could be nicer

I bought two of the 9’6” for my daughters to use for surf fishing. I paired them with Spinfisher 5500 long casts. I really like the combination. I read in a past review that the grip is very narrow and will wear out your hand during a long fight. I agree, so I did a paracord wrap around the grips on each side of the real seat. IMO, it looks good and it should help my daughters hold the rod if they hook into a big Red or Drum.
Pros
  • Light rod for a 9?6?
Cons
  • Could have a thicker grip at least above the real seat.

9'6" Medium Rod Fantastic Surf Rod
June 25, 2020
Love this rod. Bought it in summer of 2019 and the sensitivity and casting distance of lures is truly superb. The size make this very easy to handle and with the matches lure weight and the Shimano Baintrunner 6000D i'm running on it, it casts as far as i need while still being able to gets cut bait and smaller baits in out into the troughs. Sensitivity with power pro has you feeling the littlest nibbles and enough back bone to take on fighting blue or stronger stripers. I've loved fishing this rod off the coast of NJ.
Pros
  • Super Sensitive
  • balanced and easy to work
Cons
  • none i love it! You could spend less but getting the same sensitivity it probably not going to happen

High quality surf rod for light use
January 4, 2018
I own two of these rods, the 9'6" and the 10'6". Both are fantastic light plugging rods! I've thrown plugs up to 3oz with the 10'6" and 2.5oz with the 9'6". They both throw SP minnows and other light plugs very well! And they work pencil poppers and other topwater lures nicely. Solid backbone in both rods, and a nice uniform bend. Easy to forget it's a 2 piece. Overall a very nice surf rod for light use.
Pros
  • High quality surf rod for light use. Makes schoolies fun and can handle a fish into the 20# class.
Cons

Shimano Tiralejo 12'
July 2, 2017
For surf fishing in Florida replaced 12 ft ugly sticks with a pair of 12 ft tiralejo rods. Paired with Battle 8000's. They are super nice, light, powerful. Great rod.
Pros
  • Light weight, easy to load on cast, casts further, good with bigger chunk bait, handles big fish (sharks to 5 ft) yet sensitive enough detect bites and fight small fish.
Cons
  • I like the small diameter handle untill I fought a shark for 1 hr 20 min from the beach, it was painful. Need gloves if fighting big fish. Broken handle on 3 rd day got wedged in rod holder on take..

1 Answer
That setup does seem a bit much for casting to surf perch. A 8 or 9 foot rod paired with a smaller 5000 reel would have sufficed

Im heading out on a long range tuna trip out of PV, MX. The report is the Dorado are biting so I figured I should bring a popping rod. I'd like to know if the Tiralejo 9'6" would handle Dorado/Mahi? I'd like to buy the Tiralejo as I could use if for jetty and surf fishing as well instead of a dedicated popping rod. Thanks

The rods rated up to 3 oz's, paired with the right reel and that would make a good popping combo for Mahi.

I see that the Tiralejos were designed by Shimano to complement the Ultegras as part of a “long cast system†and Shimano actually recommends they be used together because the Ultegras have a “parallel foot†design. However, could I use another long-cast reel like the newer Penn Spinfisher VI LC Series (which does NOT have the parallel foot) on the Tiralejos? Or would that cause line slap?

The rod can be paired with most surf reels.

I would like to do both bait fishing and lure fishing on the surf. But a rod and reel combo that is relatively light weight. I’m seeing the 10ft 6†M Power MF action has a lure weight of 1-3.5 oz. Also the 11ft has MH power MF action and lure weight of 3-6oz. The 10.6 length with 50/50 spelt is great for me but the 11 ft 30/70 split is too big for me to carry around. I am not interested in catching mainly 3 to 4ft and less fish sizes. Is the lure weight same as the sinker weight? If so will a 3.5oz sinker be good enough for rough Surf and moving tides etc?   Is the 10ft6in good for bait fishing as well? What size sinker weight range that can be used on the 10.6 rod? And from read the other questions and answers I decided to get the shimano saragosa 6000 reel.  I am new to fishing and i wanted to get something in the mid range budget  $550
1 Answer
The best Tiralejo to match up with the Saragosa 6000 will be the 10' based on what you are describing. The 10' MH with the 1.5-5oz lure rating will allow you to cast lures within that range plus some bait fishing. When bait fishing, you really want to take the weight of the sinker plus the weight of the bait into account. If you are using 3.5oz sinkers, you have about an oz and a half to stay within that recommended lure weight. You can still go over that lure weight if necessary to hold bottom in rough conditions. The Saragosa 6000 matched up with the 10" Tiralejo would be a great option for you.

I was looking at buying a 12' Tiralejo spinning rod. Are these suitable for bait fishing at distance? Would they be suitable for a pendulum style cast within their weight range? Would a Shimano ULCI45500XSB Ultegra CI4 Plus XSB Surf Spinning Reel be a good match for this rod. If you do not think that this set up is ideal for my intended use I would be happy for you to make a suggestion of another setup & guide me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Ian
1 Answer
The 12' Tiralejo paired with an Ultegra would be a great setup for distance casting with bait rigs not exceeding 6 oz. If heavier weights are needed to hold bottom where you are fishing, I'd suggest the Penn Carnage II model number CARSFII 3065S12, or the 12' spinning models of the St. Croix Mojo Surf or Avid Surf.

Does the 11' come in 50/50 split? Would it be good paired with a 8000 Saragosa for throwing between 100gm to 150gm pluga ans sticks? I'm looking for a rod on the heavy side but not sure about the split. Recommendations?
1 Answer
The butt section of the rod measures 55" and the tip section of the rod measure approximately 79". Since it is a heavy rod rated for 3 to 6 ounces with a fast action tip it would be ideal for fishing with heavier surf lures. The Saragossa 8000 can definitely be paired up with this rod, and is a great match for it. But, the 6000 may suit it better since the rod is relatively light weight comparing to other 11' surf rods. The 8000 weighs 22 ounces while the 6000 weighs 16.5 ounces thus the 8000 would match the Daiwa CLSP1102HFS Coastal Salt Pro Surf Spinning Rod better than the Tiralejo. But, over all the Tiralejo is a great quality rod for its price; worth every penny. The fast action tip allows you to control the action of your lure as well as being able to feel everything going on on the other end of your line. Since it is rated 3 to 6 ounces you could even fish bait if you desired to.

what rod would be better suited st Croix mojo spinning rod mss106mm2 or shimano tiralejo spinning rod trs106ma for throwing 2-3/8 ounce pencil poppers and Polaris poppers at the cc canal. sometimes 3ounce. looking for good casting and strong enough to hold a 30lb plus fish. don't want 11 or 12 foot. to long for some of the banks of the canal. thanks randy
1 Answer
Honestly, we feel both of these rods will put you at an equal disadvantage at the canal. To fish it to your advantage, we feel that a rod at least 6" longer is needed. The extra length is not only for casting distance but for fighting ability as well. You want a more moderate action blank and power to fight the current and the fish. Neither of these rods offer you that. A custom production rod would really fit your needs better. The CTS S7 is an easier casting, more moderate blank. The CTS helical core in the tip section and a sturdy carbon/glass butt provide you with casting distance AND th power to fight the fish and the current of the Canal.

I asked them the same question. They said that the ratings on the rods are accurate. You can use them for bait, but be careful not to over load them. These are not "8 and bait" rods. On the other hand, the new reels will add a lot of distance to your casts.

I throw decent sized eels with the 10'6" most of the year and it does it well!
