Tiagra reels feature an innovative hydrothermal drag system that virtually eliminates the drag setting variances that affect today’s big game reels. They combine technology with years of expertise to deliver a reel that is truly superior. The new Tiagra 12, 16, 20, 30, 30 wlrs, 50, 50w, 50wrls, 80, and 130 finally bring the strength and reliability of a solid aluminum frame to members of the Tiagra family. Designed to fish heavier line right out of the box, these reels are perfectly suited to long range fishing.
Shimano Tiagra A Featured Highlights

A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings)
Our specially treated stainless steel ball bearings are at least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings.

Forged Aluminum Spool
These spools are made from cold forged aluminum then machined to provide an extremely dense, solid construction that can withstand the heavy drag pressures the reels can apply.

Chrome Plated Sideplate Screws
The sideplate screws are chrome plated to prevent corrosion.

2-Speed Gearing
Uses 2 sets of gears that are always engaged for quick, easy gear ratio changes even under load.

Ratcheting Drag Lever
eliminates the chance of the drag lever backing off due to boat vibration and allows for more precise adjustment.

Twin Disk Drag System
uses two drag disks and a floating drag plate to effectively double the drag surface which provides a wide range of settings and increased durability (TI16 & TI130A only).

Clicker
The clicker increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm when a fish bites.

Septon
The handle grip material, Septon, is soft to the touch and does not get slippery when wet (not available on TI12 & TI16).

Permalube
This lubrication improves freespool while maintaining protection and durability of moving parts.

Metal Series
With the Metal Series, metal frames keep moving parts in precise alignment for increased efficiency and durability.

Machined Aluminum Frame
These frames are machined from solid aluminum pipestock, which makes them incredibly rigid and strong for ultra tight tolerances.

Offset Ergonomic Power Grip
The power grip is offset on multiple axes to allow natural hand, arm and wrist angles to improve comfort and power (not available on (TI12 & TI16).

Ergonomic Power Handle
Comfortable, non-slip grip provides maximum comfort and torque (TI12 & TI16).

The 30W Tiagra is my go to reel for midshore NJ Tuna trolling and chunking. Super high Shimano quality. Plenty of line capacity and drag for our mid shore 20 to 100 lb bluefin and yellowfin and the two speed capability and size / weight make it a great reel for pulling in side trackers and spreader bars in a hurry when you need to clear lines.

Could you tell me what the target species would be for the Tiagra 20A? Seems like everybody either goes with 30's or 50's. What was the intent of this size reel? Thank you.
1 Answer
The Tiagra reel are for the most part strictly trolling reels. They are designed for long range fishing to be used with heavy line and to target many different species.

Tell me please . I want to buy a reel Shimano tiagra 50 wlrsa, but I do not know which rod is suitable for bottom fishing. I really need your advice
1 Answer
A heavy or extra heavy rated straight or bent butt rod for the Tiagra 50w, just note the primary use of that reel is trolling.

The TI50WLRSA has got the drag of a 80w its a more aggressive reel meant for braid with a strong mono top shot.

I am looking for rods to pair with my 2 Tiagra 16s. I would be using them for light trolling in the Gulf of Mexico of the coast of Texas.
1 Answer
Hi Brett, Based on your fishing application I would recommend the Shimano TEBC66MHSBA Talavera Bluewater Ring Guide Slick Butt Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tebc66mhsba-talavera-bluewater-ring-guide-slick-butt-rod.html This rod would be ideal for your Tiagra 16's for light trolling applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Would there be an advantage to having the 80 over the 130 for shark fishing on the beach? They both seem to have the line capacity and drag to handle large sharkd. I am new to shark fishing and need help deciding which reel to get..
1 Answer
The 80 would be more then enough for sharking off the beach. It's also a a lot lighter in weight so fatigue won't be that much of a issue.

What would be a better reel for trolling double Mojo rigs for stripers.? I was looking at the TLD 20 single speed or 2 speed and now was checking out posibly the Tiara 20 2 speed.

1 Answer
Both reels would handle that just fine.

A 2-Speed is not going to be necessary for trolling mojos and some would consider the Tiagra to be a bit overkill for targeting Striped Bass, but would work just fine.

Could I use the Tiagra 12A for surf casting or casting off the rocks? I know the Avet JX or Trinidad would be a good choice but I like the look of the Tiagra. What do you think?
1 Answer
I would advise using the Avet JX or the Trinidad for better casting ability. The Tiagra really isn't meant to be used for casting.

What is the difference between the Shimano Tiagra and Talica 2-Speed Reels?
1 Answer
The Tiagras are nearly 2X the weight of the Talicas and are more trolling and chunking reels. They have very similar drag ratings. The Talica will have slightly less line capacity. Most people are now going with the Talicas because they allow you to use "lighter" rods and are more versatile (can also be used for jigging as well as trolling).

Are the tiagra reels still made in japan? What are the difference between the early models versus the new?
1 Answer
Thanks for the question. Yes, the Tiagra is still being made in Japan. Basically, the difference between the old and new Tiagra is the handle.

Hi What is the difference beteen the three 50 models and which would be best for standup fishing. What rod would you recomend to go with this reel? Is 80lbs standup tackle going to heavy? if not what is the best standup combo in that range. We are looking at targeting marlin. Regards Lance
2 Answers
TI50A, is the old series, cheaper though. TI50W… Means Wide, more line capacity. Choose one out of the three, all are good reels. The ideal rod for standup is a 40-80 LB, or even 50-100LB, depending on the size of the Marlin. The lower rating rod for this reel, is a 40-80LB. the choice is yours. The 80lbs is not too heavy for standup, but is heavy. Pair the reel with a Shimano Talavera 60-100, or 40-80LB, relatively cheap and durable Elias
Submitted by: Elias on August 8, 2012 from Crete, Greece
No, the 80lb standup tackle should be just perfect and any of the 50's would be perfect for standup fishing.
