Redesigned for 2019, the Shimano TDR Trolling Rods serve a mainstay for anglers looking for a rod to match up with their downriggers, dipsy divers, and other trolling applications. This updated TDR series is the product of years of testing and analysis by Shimano's rod engineers. The end result is an affordable yet durable all fiberglass rod with the ideal amount of flex for most freshwater trolling applications. All Rods in the TDR series feature high density EVA handles. Downrigger models are fitted with Aluminum Oxide guides while the Leadcore model features Wire Frame guides to accommodate leadcore and wire lines.

Nice rods, other than guides falling out.
April 15, 2021
I purchased 5 of these rods to set up for Striper trolling. Before I even put the rods on the water, I noticed that random guide inserts were missing or from many of the rods. I am not sure if they arrived like that, or if they fell out while I was mounting the reels on them. Either way, I have a bunch of these rods that are missing guides before I ever took the rods on my boat. They work fine, but I'm not too happy about the guides...
Cons
  • Missing guides on multiple rods. Seems like I got a bad batch, or this is a widespread problem. Either way, it's not an isolated issue.

Love the TDR but the only thing is they need to increase the quality of the eyes in the guides in my opinion

These rods are the best value for the money I've seen. I have a couple of the older style but these new ones look much better and you beat the value. Very good service from Tackle Direct as well. Very pleased.

Im fishing with downrigger up to 100 Meter depth. Awaiting catch up to 100pounds.

Is this rod the right one?

1 Answer
Hi Eric, The Shimano TDR Trolling Rods would be ideal for downrigger fishing applications. Specifically I would recommend a Shimano TDR90H2C TDR Trolling Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tdr90h2c-tdr-trolling-rod.html This Heavy model would be the most ideal for your fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Is this rod good for trolling flashers and weights from 5 - 16 ounce?  If so which model?  Thanks
1 Answer
Hi Henry, According to Shimano, The Shimano TDR Trolling Rods would not be able to handle 16oz for this series. I would recommend a Shimano SJCM80XHB Sojourn Conventional Muskie Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-sjcm80xhb-sojourn-conventional-muskie-rod.html This would be better suited and more ideal for your fishing application. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Which fits musky downrigger trolling the best? Med heavy or the 9' heavy? I don't want to oversize the rod, or undersize it if a bigger than avg musky strikes
1 Answer
Finman,

For trolling Musky, the recommendation would be either the 8'6" or 9' MH Shimano TDR trolling rod.  The length would depend on personal choice.  Please let us know if there is anything else that we can assist you with.

Can we use this rod for casting/baitcasting?thanks
1 Answer
This rod isspecifically designed for trolling, but could be used for other applications ifneed be. That being said, if you let us know what type of fish you’re targetingand what kind of reel you’re using, we may be able to recommend a better fit.
