I use the TAC25II with Super Seeker 2x4 for targeting big bluefin. Works well with flat fall and kite/balloon a flying fish.
Pros
  • Hi speed is good for tightening up the line quickly on a kite/balloon bite. The low speed is powerful when getting a large fish up and down. Smooth drag and cranking power.

Tuna Perfection
August 19, 2021
For west coast tuna, this reel checks all the boxes - Super smooth, plenty of drag, and casts better than any other lever drag 2 speed I have ever fished. The 16 gives me all I need in 50 or 60# class - but the muscle to bump up to 80 if needed. Light enough to hold at the rail all day. While the newest addition to my offshore setups, It is already my favorite and go to reel.
Pros
  • Light Weight
  • Great Freespool and casting ability
  • Drag is smooth and strong
  • Handles multiple line ratings with ease
  • Drag and gear changes under pressure are quick, positive, and smooth

Talica 16 Two Speed
July 15, 2021
Bought this reel for tuna chunking and matched it with a Shimano Terez. Haven’t used it chunking yet, but found it can be used for jigging, if you like. It’s a very nice smooth reel and has worked well so far.
Pros
  • Provides a good amount of line capacity, even with 80 lb. power pro. Very smooth reel and light compared with some of the much heavier trolling style reels, although can be used to trol. Seems perfectly suited for the chunking I want to do.
Cons
  • I used it jigging and found it can be used to jig, but I prefer a spinner. When the reel was spooled to full capacity, you have to use care when reeling in the line to be sure you don?t overfill the outside edges of the spool. The outside edges of the spool are the point the line begins to bind. This can be addressed by using care when reeling or by putting a little less line on the reel

Depending on the species of tuna you would be fishing for I would say the Shimano Trevala Butterfly Jigging Casting Rods would pair up nice with the Talica.

can u spool my talica 25's im about to purchase and where is the option before i check out to do this?

1 Answer
Hi Gail, Yes we can. When placing your order, please include a note in the comments section with your specific spooling instructions. We are able to offer our house monofilament (Typically have Momoi Diamond and Hi Seas Grand Slam) free of charge with the purchase of a reel, just include the lb test and the color you prefer. If you would like your reel(s) spooled up with a specific monofilament other than our house mono, braid (solid or hollow), or fluorocarbon line, please add that to your order along with your spooling instructions within the notes. If adding braid, we can assist with monofilament backing or topshot free of charge so that your reel is ready to fish right out of the box. Any line that is left over will be shipped with your order. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Hi Ed, Depending on your fishing application, I would recommend a Shimano TVXFC58H Trevala PX Jigging Casting Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tvxfc58h-trevala-px-jigging-casting-rod.html This would match your Shimano Talica 10II and would be great for jigging or bottom fishing applications. on your tac8 and tac10 reel specifications the difference in line capacity for 40 and 50 pound braid is just 5 yards.  assuming that this is an error, what are the actual line capacities

for 40 and 50 pound braid?

1 Answer
The Shimano Talica TAC8II has a Braid Line Capacity of: 40lb/395yds and 50lb/390yds. The Shimano Talica TAC10II has a Braid Line capacity of: 40lb/540yds and 50lb/535yds. This rating is based on standard Powerpro Braided line. But it all depends on backing and how tight it is spooled This is the same specifications as Shimano Fishing USA lists on there website. https://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Shimano_Product_Page.P-TALICA.html Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. What size would be best for grouper fishing for gag grouper up to 50 pounds and usually about 30 pounds and also scamp and some black grouper?
1 Answer
I would recommend going with a size 12 or 16 Talica for your fishing application, both reels should supply enough line capacity and have the drag capable of making quick work of these fish

I plan on fishing a Calstar 800 50-80lb, rod for tuna . Which two speed lever drag reels would be best for that application. Easy casting and distance is important to me.Of course the smoother the drag the better. I currently have a 20 Trinidad and Torium 30. Thanks

There are a lot of options for that application. I would recommend taking a look at Avet reels with the Magic Cast feature. Another very solid option would be the Shimano Talica II.

fred factuar

September 19, 2015
what is the best way to set the drag on a talica 10 2 speed reel ?
1 Answer
First, you only adjust your preset drag while the lever is in free spool. You can cause damage to the reel otherwise. You will need to use a spring scale in order to know how many pounds of pressure you would like to have applied when the drag is in strike position. You want to set the drag worth to 25 to 33 percent of the lb test of the line you are using. The most common percentage is 33 percent. But, 25 percent is recommended for trolling for bass or other fish in that class range. You will adjust your drag setting while in free spool, then test it by tying a loop at the end of your line and pulling on the line while the drag is on strike, the reading of the spring scale on that pull will be the setting of the drag.

Hello Jon. The price difference is for both reasons. It is a significantly larger reel with a much stronger drag system. It is of aluminum construction as well. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

hi would the talica 16 2 spd be a great reel for tilefish and other wreckfish and also pollock
1 Answer
I think it would be a good choice for that. It is very light and smooth, which is a good choice when stand up fishing. It also has a high line capacity for medium-heavy line weights, which is always a benefit when deep bottom fishing. Overall, this is a great reel to choose and will give you much success through out the years.
