Smooth drag is very important and one that Shimano prides itself upon throughout the product line. Talica is no exception to the rule. However, being able to fish 3 to 4 line classes heavier than you would normally on a reel of its size makes Talica more fun to fish since you spend less time fighting your tackle and more time fighting the fish. Pre-installed with an L.R.S. (Long Range Special) style drag cam, which is designed to provide maximum drag output for heavy settings with heavy line, the Talica Single speeds are specifically designed for fishing heavy PowerPro Hollow-Ace with short Fluorocarbon topshots. The 8 & 10 sizes will fish 50 pound PowerPro Hollow-Ace with ease, while the 12 & 16 sizes can utilize up to 100 pound Hollow-Ace!

A masterpiece

Probably the nicest reel Shimano makes. In the smaller sizes the single speed makes more sense to me. The size 8 just a bit larger than a talica 12.

Great reel!

I was looking for a light weight, single speed, compact, lever drag reel with a speedy retrieve. The Shimano Talica TAC8 was exactly what I was looking for. Silky smooth drag, strong cranking power, easy casting, and durable finish. Ive taken it out over a dozen times and just hosed it down afterwards, looks like I just took it out of the box. I do wish it was slightly lighter and more compact.
Pros
  • Smooth drag, durable finish, easy on/off clicker, easy to cast, cracking power, great looking reel
Cons
  • Wish it was a little more compact and lighter (like the Okuma Andros), and a deeper cut-out on the frame for spool thumbing.

TAC12 Single Speed versus TAC12 2-Speed San Diego Based Fisherman. Is there a benefit to getting a Single Speed over a 2-Speed other than Price Point? Thanks

Given the way certain species fight, it may benefit you to have a 2-speed reel. A lower speed will give you more leverage over an extremely heavy fish that feels like deadweight on the end of your line, such as large sharks. A higher speed will benefit in instances where you need to pick up line quickly. For example, anglers who target marlin or sailfish prefer faster speeds because the fish can quickly change direction and run towards the boat.
