Built to be a jack of all trades in the saltwater realm, the Shimano 2021 Spheros SW A Spinning Reels have been redesigned to conquer both inshore and offshore waters. Now featuring Shimano's flagship Infinity Drive technology to improve pinion gear support and enhance the overall drive gear design, Spheros SW provides anglers with increased winding power under load when cranking against hard-fighting game fish. Wielding both X-Protect and X-Shield for improved water resistance and increased durability in the harsh saltwater environment, Spheros SW A fortifies an IPX8 water-resistant-rated body. The size lineup has been expanded from the previous generation to include a more comprehensive range of sizing for offshore techniques. These workhorse reels fit the bill for an extremely wide variety of saltwater applications including surfcasting, nearshore live-lining for snook or striped bass, jigging deep water wrecks for snapper and grouper, tossing lures to cobia and small tuna, and much more.

Shimano mid-range priced reels have been a staple of my arsenal forever (a LONG time). I still have and use my old Shimano reels. This reel is excellent. I rinse it off after every use and dry it in the sun. I plan to clean/lube it every couple (or more) years as I haphazardly do with my reels. Shimano reels take a licking and keep on ticking.
Note: They run small on sizing. I bout the 6000 and it's about the size of some 4500-5000 size reels of other brands I've owned. Something to keep in mind.
- Typical excellent value/quality in the mid-range Shimano reels.
- The sizing might run a little smaller than you are accustomed to if you are new to Shimano.
It casts well
It's new drive system is smooth
It matches with my 12' MH Surf Rod
- I have dunk in it in the surf and kept winding in a fish
- Its IPX8 protect really works
- Nice to have this feature in moderate priced reel
- Perfect for surf fishing..
- I will buy more for my family members who want to fish at the beach with me
- None
- drag
- none
Seems nice otherwise. Just loaded with a full 300yds of 50lb powerpro SSV2 plus a little mono backing and it filled the 10000pg spool perfectly.
Slightly annoyed that there is nowhere to hook the line.
- Bog and strong.
- Bit heavy.
All around an improvement and great for fishing top and subsurface jigs
- Size 14 with a 53in. retrieve at a great price point
The Shimano Neoprene spinning reel cover ANSC850A should fit the 18000 size reel. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
The rod to pair with the Shimano Spheros SW 18000 spinning reel would be the Shimano SpeedMaster Surf 11' spinning rod SPMS110MH2. A good general purpose surf rod would be 9'6" or 10 ' in length. You can fish both lures and bait with those. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
2 questions -
1. Does this reel come with a rubber insert for braided line to spool on and
2. if I pre-order will I be able to get this earlier than October (some sites display September 1st as the release date)?
The recommendation would be the SPSW6000XGA reel as you get more line, bigger spool, for the same size reel. As for the rubber insert, most Shimano reels do not include a rubber insert on the spool. If spooling with braid then some backing or tape should be used. As for the timing of the availability, we go by what we get from Shimano. If anything changes we will update our web site accordingly. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
