These workhorse reels fit the bill for an extremely wide variety of saltwater applications including surfcasting, nearshore live-lining for snook or striped bass, jigging deep water wrecks for snapper and grouper, tossing lures to cobia and small tuna, and much more.

Excellent reel - Shimanos are on the smaller size.
April 18, 2022
I bought the 6000 size.

Shimano mid-range priced reels have been a staple of my arsenal forever (a LONG time). I still have and use my old Shimano reels. This reel is excellent. I rinse it off after every use and dry it in the sun. I plan to clean/lube it every couple (or more) years as I haphazardly do with my reels. Shimano reels take a licking and keep on ticking.

Note: They run small on sizing. I bout the 6000 and it's about the size of some 4500-5000 size reels of other brands I've owned. Something to keep in mind.
Pros
  • Typical excellent value/quality in the mid-range Shimano reels.
Cons
  • The sizing might run a little smaller than you are accustomed to if you are new to Shimano.

Headed to the Baja Surf
March 10, 2022
Outstanding reel! Features that are comparable to the other high end Shimano reels. A sealed body and lots of pick up per crank. I was able to load 400 yards of 50# power pro braid. Headed to Baja in April and excited to have this reel for the trip.

true value

Its hard to believe you can get this nice of spinning reel for less than 200. But you can, this reel is very well made and I believe it will stand up to the brutal nature of saltwater fishing. very balanced, lots of drag, great handle. Alittle heavier than i anticipated, but made strong. I got the 8000 cause it has more drag at 29.

No line keeper on spool - 10000PG
September 28, 2021
Why would they not put a line keeper on the spool?

Seems nice otherwise. Just loaded with a full 300yds of 50lb powerpro SSV2 plus a little mono backing and it filled the 10000pg spool perfectly.

Slightly annoyed that there is nowhere to hook the line.

Hi Sean, I would recommend a Shimano TZS78XHBLK Terez Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tzs78xhblk-terez-spinning-rod-black.html This would pair well with the Shimano Spheros 14000 SW A Spinning reel for offshore popping applciations. Would an 8000 or 10000 be better for big beach Tarpon
1 Answer
Hi Lew, Based on your fishing application a 10000 size may be a little small if you hook into a large tarpon. I would recommend a Shimano SPSW14000XGA Spheros SW A Spinning Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-spsw14000xga-spheros-sw-a-spinning-reel.html This is slightly heavier than the Spheros 10000 SW and holds more line. The SPSW14000XGA Spheros SW has a Braid capacity of 50lb/400yds and would be ideal to fish for tarpon and be equipped to fight large Tarpon without getting spooled. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

looking to get this reel for my inshore nj tuna trips for jigging and tossing various plugs matched with my trevala 5'8 heavy action would this work for this application in a 10k size, this reels tech shares almost every design that the saragosa has.
1 Answer
Hi Mike, The Spheros SW A 10000 technically will work for exactly what you want. I would recommend that you pair it with Powerpro Max Cuattro in order to get 25% extra line capacity onto your reel to make it more ideal for your fishing application. What would be a good surf rod for the 18000 size as well as a good General purpose rod for everything else buy Shimano
1 Answer
Daniel,

The rod to pair with the Shimano Spheros SW 18000 spinning reel would be the Shimano SpeedMaster Surf 11' spinning rod SPMS110MH2.  A good general purpose surf rod would be 9'6" or 10 ' in length.  You can fish both lures and bait with those.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Boarder
from MA asked:
August 4, 2021
Am looking at either the SPSW5000XGA or the SPSW6000XGA for a fast action 10-30 lb, 8.5 foot rod. Planning to use 20 or 30 lb braid, going after stripers in the surf.

2 questions -

1. Does this reel come with a rubber insert for braided line to spool on and

2. if I pre-order will I be able to get this earlier than October (some sites display September 1st as the release date)?

1 Answer
Boarder,

The recommendation would be the  SPSW6000XGA  reel as you get more line, bigger spool, for the same size reel.  As for the rubber insert, most Shimano reels do not include a rubber insert on the spool.  If spooling with braid then some backing or tape should be used.  As for the timing of the availability, we go by what we get from Shimano.  If anything changes we will update our web site accordingly.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
