The Shimano SpeedMaster XTC Surf Spinning Reel is a high-performance workhorse reel built to provide surf anglers with advanced long cast capabilities at an incredible value. Loaded with signature Shimano technologies and sleek matte black cosmetics, the SpeedMaster is equipped with X-Ship technology for improved gear durability and a stacked Hi-Speed Drag system capable of putting the brakes on trophy fish in the surf. At the heart of the SpeedMaster's long cast capabilities is Shimano's Super Slow Oscillation system that ensures optimal line lay to maximize casting distance.

Shimano Technology Found In SpeedMaster XTC Surf Spinning Reels :
  • X-Ship - By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear remains in precise alignment with the drive gear and stays in the same position under even the heaviest of loads. This eliminates friction between the spool shaft and gear which translates to better casting performance and increased gear durability.
  • G-Free Body - G-Free Body technology enables the reel’s center of gravity to be moved closer to the center of the reel seat, and therefore the anglers hand position. This shift in weight and balance helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.
  • Super Slow Oscillation - Allows for exceptional line lay and casting distance by reducing the speed the line travels up and down the spool on the cast. This results in less friction as line leaves the spool which improves both distance and accuracy.

Blacktip Fishing
April 28, 2020
I bought this reel a few months ago to use for surf fishing for blacktip sharks. Just last week I landed a 5.5 footer on the beach. Fish ran several hundred yards straight out. Reel held up flawlessly. Does enough drag to stop most fish and does it smoothly. Only reason I gave 4 stars is because the handle is much too small, which makes long fights uncomfortable.
Pros
  • Power
  • Durability
  • Massive line capacity
  • Long casting
Cons
  • Small and uncomfortable handle

Iam a novice surf fishing fan, but this reel + speedmaster 12ft surf rod I can cast like a pro. I use this with my daiwa sealine 15ft its a mile cast with 3.5oz lead I can’t believe I can do that, fighting a 10lbs stingray is a very nice fight , for now that my trophy fish , always waiting to land a shark, I always get a very strong bite that I even got my sand spike broken luckily The rod is to long got stuck in sand got a chance to grab it, but the fish got away , need to learn more in setting the drag, I got two of this reel that’s all I need
Pros
  • You can load it with lots of line, for the$ I cannot complain for its specs. Still smooth in reeling after 500hrs of fishing,
Cons
  • After all that hours I can feel that there?s a bit shaking in reel handle

Decent for the price.

If you want a good versatile high line capacity reel this is a good choice. I’ve used it for big stripers in the canal throwing 5 oz as well off jetties with 1 oz epoxys. Hasn’t failed me yet. The bottom of the spool does have a tendency to catch but with the manual bail just take a split second to look down or keep your like tight.

Constantly wrapping line under the spool!!
August 7, 2019
Bought the reel for a trip to Cape Hatteras. Love Spanish mackerel fishing and tailor blues. But this reel as of now really sux! I have contacted Shimano and they will look at it to see if there is some sort of defect. The reel after a cast not always but quite often wraps the line on the very bottom of the spool and it ends up going under the spool and wrapping around the spindle.

HUGE pain in the a** while standing shoulder to shoulder with other fishermen, because I then have to hand wind the line in to get it back!

I will repost when I find something out from Shimano!
Pros
  • Fast when it works
  • Looks good
Cons
  • Huge spool
  • Takes allot of line
  • Not working correctly as of now
  • Manuel bail rest after cast
  • Crank handle is a bit awkward while retrieving at high speed

Does this come with a spool spacer to reduce the amount of line capacity n how much line does it hold with the spacer?
1 Answer
Daulua,

The Shimano SpeedMaster XTC 1400 Surf spinning reel does not come with a spare spool.  It does come with spool spacers, but Shimano does not document on their site the line capacity using them.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

This reel can handle getting wet but I wouldn't recommend submerging it as it isn't a sealed reel.
