Undoubtedly raising the bar for large saltwater spinners, the Shimano Saragosa SW A Spinning Reels continue the Saragosa's legacy of absolutely dominating the saltwater realm. Back in 2013, the Saragosa SW set the standard for heavy-duty saltwater spinning reels with features like X-Ship, waterproof seals, and a twin drag system. In 2020, the new Saragosa SW A ups the ante in typical Shimano fashion by implementing Infinity Drive Technology. Taken from Shimano's top-of-the-line Stella SW C, Infinity Drive significantly increases winding torque while providing an incredibly smooth and light rotation under immensely heavy loads. The Infinity Drive System is designed to give you the ultimate edge when fighting the world's most powerful game fish. Built around the battle tested HAGANE Body, the reel maintains its rigidity under heavy loads to keep all internal components and gears in precise alignment, maximizing power output and extending the life of the reel for many seasons out in the deep. The cold forged HAGANE gears provide the rotational smoothness and effortless operability that anglers have come to expect from Shimano reels. Benefiting from multiple features to prevent water intrusion, such as a waterproof Cross Carbon drag, an IPX8-rated waterproof body, and X-Protect water repellant coating, the Saragosa SW A can take a splash or accidental submersion on the chin and keeping going without skipping a beat. Whether you're an inshore or offshore angler on any coast, the Saragosa SW A is a thoroughbred workhorse of a spinning reel ready to take on the biggest challenge your fishery has to offer.

Shimano Technology Found In Saragosa SW A Spinning Reels:

  • Infinity Drive - Through the use of new main shaft supporting structure to eliminate friction within the pinion gear, reels with Infinity Drive achieve increased winding torque, along with an incredibly smooth and light rotation under heavy loads.
  • Hagane Gear - Boasting amazing strength and durability, Hagane Gear is a process in which the gearing is calculated in minute detail and cold forged instead of being cut. This application of state-of-the-art technologies gives the angler reel smoothness from the first use through years of enjoyment.
  • Hagane Body - A reel body with high rigidity, which virtually eliminates body flexing due to its stiffness and impact resistance. The result? An angler’s actions are more efficiently transformed into cranking power. It’s efficiency through strength.
  • Cross Carbon Drag - Allows for a wider range of drag settings, enhanced drag washer durability, and the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
  • X-Tough Drag - X-Tough Drag with its dramatically enhanced smoothness, control, and toughness anticipates the vigorous speed of massive game fish such as Bluefin Tuna and Giant Trevally.
  • Water-Resistant Drag - With the use of rubber gaskets the drag is sealed against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.
  • X-Protect - By combining a water repellant coating and a specially designed water channeling labyrinth construction, X-Protect provides high-level water resistance without adding weight or sacrificing light rotor rotation.
  • X-Shield - X-Shield and X-Protect combine to provide extreme water resistance in the harshest conditions thanks to a number of strategically placed seals.
  • IPX-8 Water-Resistant Body - IPX-8 is a water resistance rating that signifies the piece of equipment can be submerged, yet not necessarily operated, in over 1 meter of water for 30 minutes without damaging the equipment.
  • Propulsion Line Management System - The most obvious component of this system is the Propulsion spool lip design, which has been proven through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations to provide longer casts while preventing backlashes and wind knots.
  • X-Ship - By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear remains in precise alignment with the drive gear and stays in the same position under even the heaviest of loads. This eliminates friction between the spool shaft and gear which translates to better casting performance and increased gear durability.
  • One-Piece Bail - One-Piece Bail allows the line to travel unimpeded to the line roller. Its seamless design reduces friction and the change of tangles or cuts to the bail arm.
  • S A-RB Bearings - These bearings undergo the same anti-corrosion process as Shimano’s A-RB Bearings, with the addition of shields on both sides of the bearings to reduce the possibility of salt, dirt, or other foreign objects inhibiting the bearing’s rotation.

This has been my main plugging reel from shore. It is great. Smooth drag and never really have to worry about this part of the setup. I've landed nice stripers and blues with this and I've never lost one that I can remember that I blamed on the reel. It's rugged, smooth, and dependable. It's a little pricey, but I've had mine for years and don't daydream about getting a better reel in the future - this is all I need.

Below in 2 different comments, a question of a 10000 spool fitting onto an 8000 reel body. One comment states it will fit, and another states it will not fit, both answered by the same person. For clarification, will a 10000 spool go on an 8000 frame for the newestest model saragosa?

Thanks

1 Answer
Hi Tim, You can put a 6000 Saragosa SW A spool onto a 5000 Saragosa SW A spinning reel. However, you cannot put a 8000 Saragosa SW A spool onto a 6000 Saragosa SW A spinning reel and you can't put a 10000 SW A Saragosa Spool onto a 8000 SW A Saragosa reel due to the rotor will not allow that size to fit on the 8k body. I'm putting together a shark fishing rig to use from shore in southwest Florida.  I plan to use 80# braid as the main line. I would like this setup to be versatile enough to use for fishing other large species from shore using big cut bait. A friend uses the 25000 series, but it seems like overkill to me - but maybe not. What would be a good combination for surf fishing For roosterfish down in cabo San Lucas?
1 Answer
Hi Kevin, For your fishing application I would recommend a 11'-12ft rod and a reel that can hold at least 300 -350 yards of 40# braid. Long distance casting needed and large swell so need to keep line above waves. I would also recommend a reel that has a fast retrieve rate, 40" + per turn, to burn surface lures in. With that in mind I would recommend a Daiwa BGMQ8000-H BG MQ Spinning Reel. Specificaly Model: BGMQ8000-H; TackleDirect Code: DAI-3513. This would pair up perfectly with a Tsunami Airwave Elite Surf Rod. Model: TSAWESS-1102H; TackleDirect Code: TSU-0093. https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-bgmq8000-h-bg-mq-spinning-reel.html.https://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-tsawess-1102h-airwave-elite-surf-spinning-rod.html. I'm putting together a spinning combo for the Bahamas.  I will mostly be using this for vertical jigging the reefs and dropoff (60'-200' depths), or occasionally for bottom fishing or as a pitch rod offshore.  I am considering the Saragosa SW A 10000 with 50lb braid, and also looking at the Cabo PTSE80 with 50lb braid. The Saragosa's durability is appealing but the extra drag of the PTSE80 also seems great.  What would you recommend?  Any rod recommendations for this setup would be appreciated.
1 Answer
Hi Jonathan, Based on your fishing application I would recommend The Shimano Saragosa SW A. Model: SRG10000SWAPG; TackleDirect Code: SHM-4059. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-srg10000swapg-saragosa-sw-a-spinning-reel.html. I would pair this with a Nomad Design Heavy Jigging Rod. Specificially model: NJS603-5; TackleDirect Code: NOM-0107. https://www.tackledirect.com/nomad-design-njs603-5-heavy-jigging-spinning-rod.html. The Shimano Saragosa is very smooth, and very solid reel that has Hagane gears and has a IPX-8 water resistant body. However you can't put a 10000 SW A Saragosa Spool onto a 8000 SW A Saragosa reel due to the rotor will not allow that size to fit on the 8k body. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Could really use your opinion.  I really dont understand this whole gear ratio talk.  I purchased a boat and plan to do a lot of fishing in south Florida with my grown up kids.  Bottom, wreck, etc.  Maybe try some jigging as well.  What advantages/disadvantages does the 14k have over the 10K?
1 Answer
Ralph,

The Shimano Saragosa SW 14000XG has the advantage of a higher gear ratio / line retrieval rate for speed/vertical jigging, throwing/retrieving lures, and getting your line up from the bottom faster, less turns of the handle.  Plus you get a bit more line on the spool.  The SW 10000PG would be better if you are going to mostly jigging or slow pitch jigging where you want the slower retrieval rate.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

what rod would pair well with a 8k reel? I want to be able to cast with it. The rod that I already own the eye is to low and prevents the reel from casting smoothly
1 Answer
Tim,

Here are a couple of recommendations for that 8000k reel,  the Shimano Teramar XX Northeast (TXNS70H) or the St. Croix Mojo Inshore (JIS711MHF).  Also, depending on what weight lures you are throwing and what lb line your using will impact your casting ability.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

what size saragosa would be good for jigging for snapper/grouper and bottomfishing? Also what rod would pair could for this?
1 Answer
Wally,

We would recommend the 8000 or 10000. Both are the same body with different spools. 10000 will only be slightly heavier, but will give you a little more torque to winch up a good sized grouper with the lower gear ratio. Here are a couple options for rods to pair up:

Would a 8000 Saragosa be too big to put onto a 10’ 6”  St Croix Mojo? I’ll be using it for surf, jetty and canal fishing with lures and bait. I was looking at the 6000, but felt I may need the bigger reel.
1 Answer
The 8000 will be a good match for the 10ft 6in rod escpically for the surf. Plenty of capacity and can handle lures and live baits.

Would a saragosa 10000 pair well with a 6'9 feet shimano terez extra heavy?
1 Answer
Yes those two would pair well together although a better match would be a Heavy rod as the line weights match up more closely. Another option: Shimano TLS72HBBL Tallus Blue Water Spinning Rod this is the 7'2" model so not too much longer than what you were looking for.

What's the difference in the lettering between the 5000axg and the 6000ahg ,looking to put one of these on a 7'6"  2 piece weapon jr.For a decent trave rod with some muscle.
1 Answer
The main difference is the spool size, the 6000 holds more line. The 6000 also has a slightly slower gear ratio at 5.7:1 vs the 5000's 6.2:1 however they retrieve the same amount of line per crank.

There is little difference between the weight as well, so you could go with either reel for your rod.

What size reel do you recommend to pair with Shimano Tiralejo 11ft Medium Heavy (TRS110MHA)? Will be used primarily for surf fishing FL gulf coast (panhandle and central gulf FL) as well as up and down Atlantic coast. Shimano website recommended Ultegra CI4+ but the Saragosa SW A is IPX8 waterproof rated and larger handle.

1 Answer
If you want casting distance, I'd stick with the Ultegra, but if you want a reel that can withstand more of the elements, I'd go with a Saragossa 8000.
