By using a large diameter drive gear, moving the pinion gear closer to the center of the drive gear to provide 20% more power, and by supporting the pinion gear with two A-RB ball bearings, X-Ship provides a smooth, effortless retrieve, and also virtually eliminates the pinion gear twist and rotor flex common with most spinning reels when fighting a fish. - Magnumlite CI4 Rotor (1000-4000 sizes)

- Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement
Using a special cold forged aluminum drive gear and a hardened brass pinion gear (Stainless Steel pinion gear on Stella SW), reels equipped with the Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement will retain their out-of-the-box smoothness much longer than before. In fact, testing has shown that this combination of metals is more durable than an all-stainless steel drivetrain while maintaining the smoothness that Shimano is famous for. - Propulsion Line Management System
The most obvious component of the Propulsion Line Management System is the new Propulsion spool lip design. Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations it has been determined that this new spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming. It also allows the line to flow off of the spool in smaller loops during the cast which means less slap on the stripper guide. This means longer casts with less friction. The Propulsion spool also utilizes a long stroke design to further enhance the casting distance. Furthermore, there is less bouncing of the line on the spool lip like on a standard spinning spool. Because of the unique shape of the Propulsion spool, the line flows consistently off of the spool. So, with a standard spool, friction alternates from heavy to light as the line slaps the spool lip. This causes backlash and inconsistent line speeds. The Propulsion spool lip provides consistently light friction to overcome these situations. - Aero Wrap II Oscillation
Aero Wrap II is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds for the Propulsion Spool Lip design. It provides uniform line lay and winding shape to prevent loss of energy during the cast while providing longer casts than other oscillation systems. So, casting distance increases with less effort required. - SR-Concept

This oversized drive gear was designed with three-dimensional analysis. This allows the surface of each tooth to be contoured exactly to the tooth shape of the pinion gear. The result is more tooth surface of the drive gear is in contact with the tooth surface of the pinion gear. Smoothness, torque, efficiency and durability are all increased. - SR Handle
This handle screws directly into the drive gear, resulting in zero play between the handle and gear. The 1000 size handle is a very thin solid shank, while the larger sizes use a hollow handle shank, that reduces weight while maintaining extremely strong and durable properties. - SR One-Piece Bail Wire
This one-piece bail wire has no gap for line to snag on during normal operation. Made of stainless steel, it reduces friction and allows the line to get onto the line roller quicker.

Line slack around the line roller is the main cause of line trouble during casting and retrieving. The S-Arm Cam has a protruding lower surface on the bail arm that helps prevent slack that would lead to line cuts or tangles.

With the use of rubber gaskets, the drag is protected against intrusion of the elements, such as water or sand. - Maintenance Port
The maintenance port is an easily accessed hole strategically located for easy maintenance of the reel. Using a slot-head screwdriver, the rubber sealed plug can be removed from the reel. One drop of lightweight oil or grease can be applied to the drivetrain to prevent corrosion and to protect the smooth retrieve of the reel. Be sure to not over-lubricate the reel as excessive lubrication can cause the reel to become sluggish. - Fluidrive II
Building upon the successes of Fluidrive, which provides extremely tight tolerances and control in the cutting process, Fluidrive II polishes the gear surface to maximize tooth contact. This increases the efficiency of the retrieve for more power with less effort. - Floating Shaft
With this feature, using a bearing or bushing, friction is reduced between the pinion gear and spool shaft for increased smoothness and durability. - Dyna-Balance
This feature eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counter balancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing, an approach similar to car tire balancing, Shimano is able to redistribute the rotor weight to create smooth rotation and eliminate vibrations caused by the reel. - Super Stopper II
Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way bearing that eliminates backplay. This provides the angler with instant hooksetting power. In some reels, the Super Stopper II can be turned off to allow backreeling for special techniques and situations. - Repairable Clicker

I’ve had this reel for multiple years now and it has been my best reel in my arsenal still. It’s strong, smooth and as always reliable.

Drag Failure

Use caution purchasing this real. I'm a huge Shimano reel fan, but the drag on this reel is unreliable. Have used it for two years and lost several fish due to the drag locking up. Once, it locked up so tight that pliers were required to loosen the drag knob which now bears permanent scars. There is considerable forum information about this known issue. Having said all that, with extra care to free up the drag and set it prior to each use the reel is smooth problem free otherwise. Still not a good investment.

My husband has been looking at this reel for along time asking friends, people he has seen fishing with this reel every question that you would imagine if it was any good.
I finally decided to buy him one he loves it. It's smooth reeling,drag strong,holds braided line of 30 pounds just right for the type of fishing he uses for I would recommend this real.

I have 2 of these reels that I use for stripers, blues, albies and bonito. Very light but they have held up well. The drag is smooth and sensitive. I highly recommend these reels.

I bought this reel for fishing striper. Its a pretty light weight reel. I can hold the rod for half day without feeling tire on the hands. Its a awsome reel you should have.

My third Sustain in the FG line. So far I have used this reel for bass ponds, whiting in the near surf, specks and redfish. It has not been a disappointment. Very smooth action and reliable drag. Handles over-slot reds easily.

I PURCHASED THE 10000 MODEL FOR GROUPER FISHING AND POPPING FOR KINGS IN CENTRAL FL. I HAVE IT MATCHED WITH A TEREZ , IT IS A POWERHOUSE COMBO THAT IM PROUD TO OWN, BUT EVEN BETTER THEY WORK. LIGHT WEIGHT VERY VERY SMOOTH REELS, THEY HANDLE KINGFISH ,GROUPER , SHARKS, RAYS, AND EVEN GOLIATH GROUPER ! THE DRAG IS PRETTY DARN SMOOTH TOO. I HAVE MINE LOADED WITH 80# DIAWA SALTIGA BRAID. THIS SET UP IS PERFECT FOR MY TYPE OF FISHING. ONCE YOU USE THIS REEL A STELLA DOESNT SEEM AS IMPORTANT ANYMORE IMO.
