Shimano Ocea Plugger Full Throttle Spinning Rods utilize Spiral X and Hi-Power X blank construction making them ideal for offshore popping and plugging. The new design is more powerful in the mid-section, provides longer accurate casts, and takes the pressure off of the angler making it easier to pull on big fish.

Shimano Ocea Plugger Full Throttle Spinning Rods Features:

  • Hi Power X leads to less ovalization and increased strength to protect from breakage
  • Spiral X combined with Hi-Power X provides a best-in-class strength to weight ratio

Great tuna rod

A very lightweight rod that I thought would break but never failed with a 160 BFT for the 90 minute fight. This was after casting a 5oz lure for 1/2 hour. You don't get as tired casting like the heavy rods
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Exceptionally strong

Please explain the max drag at 60 degree part of  the description. I was hoping to pair a twin power to one of these rods however the reels I wish to use all have max drags over 50lbs. My intentions are to use the setup for AJs, yellowfin tuna, large esox, Grouper, and salmon.

Respectfully,

Joshua R.

1 Answer
The max drag/angle of the rod is what Shimano suggests as the max drag to put on the rod at a 60* angle of the rod during a fight.  No need to get a protractor out, that is most likely the angle the rod was tested on a machine and means you should keep from raising the rod too high to the sky when fighting a fish...

Also - While the reels you are using may have a max drag rating of 50lbs, you are most likely not utilizing all of that while fighting a fish as 50lbs of drag would be extremely difficult to fight a fish on a popping rod for any period of time, not to mention increasing the risk of a number of failures. I'd recommend a drag rating of 1/3 to no more than 1/2 the breaking strength of the line used.
