Just buy one (or more)
March 22, 2020
I've always liked Shimano reels, and when my wife and I agreed it was time for new reels to replace our almost 30-year old Shimanos with the original quickfire system, I started looking around at what Shimano had these days. I was shocked to find they had spinning reels with the Quickfire II system that cost less than $15 shipped to my door. I figured there must have been a misprint. So I took a chance (or so I thought) and bought 2 of these in the 2000 series. We do a lot of small stream and river kayak fishing, and typically have 4 or 6 lb. line spooled on reels this size with 6' medium action rods. Well, these reels were just the ticket. I reserved judgement until I made a few trips with my new $12 reel. Man, I gotta say I'm blown away at how good this little reel is. I can't believe I bought it new for $12. I would have paid $20 for it 40 years ago. So far, I've had it on several trips for largemouth, Guadalupes and whites on central TX rivers, and in the first 5 trips I've caught over 100 fish on this reel. It has performed flawlessly. I figure if it breaks on my next trip, that will be roughly $2/trip for the reel. But I don't expect that. In fact, I expect to get another 30 years out of this Shimano the way I did my last one that this replaced. Either way, I'm one happy camper. Just get it!
Pros
  • Extremely good performance to price ratio.
  • Tackle direct was perfect.
Cons
  • None so far!

the best brand at the price of a lure

this reel is the cheapest of shimano but although it has the brake back, it is very good, I use it in salt water, I have done it trolling and throwing, important to do maintenance, the lever must take it out from time to time because maybe it stays and I can not take it out
Pros
  • very cheap
  • shimano
  • excellent
Cons
  • needs good constant maintenance if you are in salt water

Excellent reel at bargain price

I ve used these reels for many years in fresh and salt water and they always perform well. Drags work well on large fish and they are impervious to the corrosive effects of salt water. Dont let the price fool you.

Nice inexpensive reel for medium weight lines.

Are inexpensive reels for fishing for crappie and sand bass when they are spawning. The quick fire takes a little getting used to, but it will get you bait back in the water faster once you get used to it.

Best bang for the buck! This is the same shimano I bought 30 years ago for more than your current price. All the features, quick fire bail, rear drag, smoothcrank and reliability at a give away price, I'd better buy another before the price goes up or they sellout. Thanks Marty
Pros
  • quickfire bail, rear drag, t-handle

IX4000R - Fantastic Reel

It's a bullet proof reel at a bargain price. I absolutely abuse these reels and they continue to work as they did when new. The Shimano engineers earned their paychecks with this model.

Why did I doubt?
September 22, 2020
I was skeptical about this because of the price and relatively slow gear ratio. I didn't feel particularly impressive but on the water it was fast enough retrieval, smooth, and the quick fire works great. I've been using these since the 80's, the only thing that has changed is that they are even a better value now.
Pros
  • Rear Drag, light weight, quickfire, value

You simply can't beat these reels reliability. They are workhorses. They aren't the smoothest but they aren't clunky either. You can't find a reel in this price range that competes.

Will it handle salt water
1 Answer
This reel is more designed for freshwater and is not sealed so saltwater will greatly reduce the life of this reel.

how much yards of 30lbs. braid can be rolled on the ix400?
1 Answer
The majority of 30 lb. braided lines equate to a 8 lb mono diameter. You can expect to get approximately 240 yards of 30 lb braid on the 4000 size reel.
