Built with Shimano's highest-performing rod blank technologies, the Shimano Grappler Type Slow J Jigging Rods are purpose built for the Japanese inspired technique of slow pitch jigging. The Grappler Type Slow J features a moderate action conducive for slinging jigs upwards off of the seafloor and allowing them to flutter downwards on slack line. These slow pitch rods are deceptively powerful with a deep parabolic flex throughout the entirety of the blank.

Shimano's Grappler series rods are built from blanks utilizing their proprietary Spiral-X and Hi-Power X construction that produces the most powerful, lightest, and most sensitive blanks available. Spiral X construction consists of multiple layers comprised of carbon tape that tightly winds the blank diagonally in opposite directions, resulting in enhanced torsional rigidity without adding extra weight. This construction results in an extremely responsive rod that allows for instant power transmission while casting or jigging and greatly enhances fish fighting capabilities. Spiral X blanks are 250% more structurally rigid and 180% less prone to twisting than standard blank construction. These cutting edge blanks are fitted with Fuji Alconite guides and an SiC tip, along with comfortable EVA handles. The end result is a rod that delivers sharp and crisp precision control that is extremely light to reduce angler fatigue.

Nice rod...Shimano came close...

I love the spiral X and high power X technology... I have pulled up some big fish with this rod!!! It is a nice and comfortable rod but the action is a little light in my opinion and the guides are a little weak... Also after two years and maybe 20 trips I am noticing some corrosion(rust) around both the guides and the real seat which is very disappointing… my rods usually go into the shower with me after a day on the boat and then get a towel dried… I know I'm weird!
Pros
  • Nice looking comfortable rod?
Cons
  • Light action, early onset of corrosion?

So I bought the medium and loved it but felt a need for a second so I wouldn’t have to change setup just switch to the other rod. I picked up the medium heavy and it’s perfect! Jigging lures for rockfish and lings or live lining bait fish is amazing while on the lighter rod I shrimp fly and squid.
Pros
  • Strong feels like it can handle any weight you put on it.
Cons
  • No hook keeper but you can fix that with a Fuji ez keeper

Difference between Grappler & Game Type Slow J...
November 17, 2020
Difference between Grappler & Game Type Slow J...
Grappker Slow J DOES NOT have
1st. Spiral-X Core - 2.5x stronger than Spiral-X (thanks to NANOALLOY? technology)
2nd. CI4+ reel seat
3rd. Stainless LKW guides / SiC rings
4th. When Grappler Slow J compares with Game Type Slow J, it is not a beginner rod, Game Type Slow J is much easier to use for the Slow Jigging beginners.

Rod Failure
October 18, 2020
I hooked a very large fish on the bottom with the medium heavy slow pitch. Goliath possibly?. Rod broke about 12 inches from the grip. My hands were never on the glass only on the grip. It was a clean break. Granted I was putting the heat to it. Who knows? I was disappointed. It was the 3 rd time out with not much fish caught on it. I thought with the spiral X rap it would have been tougher.
Pros
  • Beautiful Rod
Cons
  • Hard to get. It broke.

Great rod, lifts fish well when slow pitching. Better with the heavier jigs. Awesome price from Tackle Direct!
