Built to do battle with the toughest pelagic heavyweights, the Shimano Grappler Type C Popping Rods utilize Shimano's highest-performing rod blank technologies. Much different than the other rods in Shimano's Grappler series, the Grappler Type C is designed for long distance casting poppers and stickbaits rather than vertical jigging. These fast action popping rods feature a soft tip for launching lures great distances, and a sturdy backbone that provides unbelievable fighting power against the hardest fighting offshore species like tuna, giant trevally, various billfish species, and more.
Shimano's Grappler series rods are built from blanks utilizing their proprietary Spiral-X and Hi-Power X construction that produces the most powerful, lightest, and most sensitive blanks available. Spiral X construction consists of multiple layers comprised of carbon tape that tightly winds the blank diagonally in opposite directions, resulting in enhanced torsional rigidity without adding extra weight. This construction results in an extremely responsive rod that allows for instant power transmission while casting or jigging and greatly enhances fish fighting capabilities. Spiral X blanks are 250% more structurally rigid and 180% less prone to twisting than standard blank construction. These cutting edge blanks are fitted with Fuji Alconite guides and an SiC tip, along with comfortable EVA handles. The end result is a rod that delivers sharp and crisp precision control that is extremely light to reduce angler fatigue.

After shopping around for a quality popping rod, I finally settled on the Shimano Grappler Type C. Living in the Florida panhandle, I target a wide variety of fish species such as jacks, drum, kings, and tuna. I needed a rod that could specifically handle a variety of conditions that I encounter at the jetties, and while fishing from the pier or surf. This rod can do all of that!

I don't know how the one customer says they are limited to a 6000 size reel. My Saragosa 14000 fits perfectly. It is perfect fro bridge snook and tarpon. Casting x-rap 14's with 65 lb braid and 80 lb yozuri pink flouro leader.

Love the Grappler rod line

Got the 8' medium. Threw 1 1/2oz up to 2 3/4oz plugs and jigs. Rod handled all plugs and jigs with no issues. I don't throw anything over 3oz so not sure how it handles plugs at the top of it's weight ratings. Use it mostly for shore and jetties. Works great for top water and subsurface plugs. Mated with an 8000 TP and 40lb braid with leader. Cast with it for hours and never wore me out. I do recommend a casting glove with the heavier setup to same your fingers.

Feels like a medium action should feel, 7'10" med/lite

After receiving my 7' lite grappler I ordered the 7'10 med/light to compare the 7' light and 8' medium. This is the way the medium rated Grapplers should be. Love the Grapple C series. Just feel that their action rating is off by one rod. 7' lite should be med/light, 7' 10" should be medium and 8' medium should be med/heavy. The rods are light, sensitive and the two piece design at the handle makes them feel like a one piece rod. Paired with a Stella 6K, 30lb Sufix braid. Feels great in the hands, Cast up to the rated lure weight with easy. Highly recommend.

Great Rod, great action 7' light

I originally purchased the 8' medium. Felt it was too stiff and acted as a heavy action. I wanted something that would break down to the size of my two surf rods I take when traveling by air. With this being a two piece at the handle it fit the bill. I tested lures from 1/2oz to the 2oz rating. The 1/2oz bucktail went off like a rocket with a quick flip of the rod instead of a full swing. All lures through the range cast very well and the rod loaded with ease. This 7' light feels like a 7' medium Teramar. Rod is very sensitive and light. Paired with a Shimano Twin power 4K and this is my new go to rod for inshore and light surf casting.

Spiral X technology is absolutely noticeable when fighting fish. There is zero wobble in the rod. This allows you to put the screws to the fish unlike most other saltwater rods. Incredibly light yet can handle bruisers. I’m going to be buying the slow jig model because of its versatility. You won’t be disappointed.

Grappler Type C 8' Med

Received my new rod quicker than expected. TD shipped same day. Love the fit and finish of the rod. For a medium action it seems a little stiffer than I'm used too. Also the tip isn,t as soft as I would like. I went out and tested it with plugs from 1 oz thru 3 oz. 2 oz plus or minus seems to be the sweat spot. I threw jerk baits, top waters and spoons. Also threw a 3 3/8 oz Tsunami top water which felt heavy on the rod from start of throw to release. Rod was matched with a Saragossa 6K with 30lb 832 Sufix and 30lb leader. Also used a 5000 Stella that is the late 90's vintage. They both balanced well and felt good in the hands. I tried my 8000 Saragossa and Stella but the reel seat size did not fit as I could not tighten the jam nut. The handle is thinner than expected so if you have larger hands it might feel awkward. I was looking to use this rod for the above mentioned lures and weights for shore casting and piers. I am thinking on ordering the ML to compare it and see which one fits my needs better. All in all I like the rod, but not sure it is the perfect match for my needs.

Shimano Grappler Type C Medium
Here are some initial impressions of the Medium 7’7” Type C Grappler. I am a Florida Fisherman with a focus on in shore and near shore. I fish about 300 days a year, but my focus has been on light spinning rods either with live bait or with lures less than one ounce. This is my first popping rod. My intent is to throw lures larger than one ounce to big jacks, tarpon, bonita, etc. So far, I have used lures as large as the 3 ounce Chugg Norris, 3 ounce Halcro Max, Shimano Orcas (2+ ounce), Nomad Design 115 and 150 Madscads. The rod is very comfortable with all of these lures. I get similar casting distance on many of these lures, so the rod loading may be less of a restriction on casting distance that lure surface area or aerodynamics. The reel seat may be best suited to Shimano or Diawa reels or those with a shorter foot than the Penn reels. I am currently using a Penn Spinfisher V 5500. The Penn is a good weight, drag, and line capacity match to my intended use, and it balances well to the rod. However, the reel foot is just a little too long to use the second reel seat lock down nut. I will look at a Saragosa 8000 or a Van Staal VR150, or explore the Spinfisher VI 5500 for a better fit to the reel seat. The rod is quality built and should withstand daily use for years. I would love to try the Type C in other weights and lengths to really dial it in to my specific uses. Following seas and tight lines.

I own a higher model Ocea Plugger rod and Full Throttle rod so I was curious to see the quality of these lower priced models. I was glad to see that these rods are built with great materials and the X-Wrap blanks are second to none. Shimano makes great rods. My next purchase will be a model from the new Terez series!
