Compact, lightweight, and tuned for high performance in finesse fishing scenarios, the Shimano Curado MGL 70 K Baitcasting Reels are the latest edition to the legendary Curado low-profile lineup. Equipped with a shallow, lightweight MGL II Spool, the Curado MGL 70 K is designed to excel at throwing light lures on light lines for finesse presentations. The MGL II Spool requires less start-up energy due to decreased inertia and results in longer casts with reduced effort. With this technology, anglers can utilize baitcasting gear for applications that were previously considered spinning tackle techniques. Not limited to finesse fishing, the MGL 70 K is also a great choice for anglers pitching and flipping in tight cover, or for anyone who doesn't mind sacrificing line capacity for comfortable palming and reduced weight. Despite its smaller size, the MGL 70 K has plenty of stopping power thanks to a Cross Carbon Drag. As to be expected from any reel in the Curado family, these reels offer a plethora of proprietary Shimano tech that make it one of the most feature rich reels in its class. The use of Shimano's fine toothed MicroModule Gear allows for a buttery smooth retrieve that stands the test of time, while the SVS Infinity Braking system offers a wide range of adjustment to help you dial in the perfect cast regardless of conditions.

Shimano Technology Found In Curado MGL 70 K Baitcasting Reels:

  • Hagane Body - A reel body with high rigidity, which virtually eliminates body flexing due to its stiffness and impact resistance. The result? An angler’s actions are more efficiently transformed into cranking power. It’s efficiency through strength.
  • MGL II Spool - Lightweight spool design significantly reduces the moment of inertia, allowing the angler to experience greater casting distance and accuracy with a wide variety of lures.
  • MicroModule Gear - State-of-the-art gear design makes use of smaller gear teeth and more of them, which results in a more efficient gear train and much smoother retrieve.
  • SVS Infinity - Provides easy to manage, consistent spool control and brake force that is easily adjusted as conditions change. Brake weights use inner friction against the raceway during the cast for precision casting even when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides quick, precise adjustments on the fly for when conditions or baits change.
  • Cross Carbon Drag - Allows for a wider range of drag settings, enhanced drag washer durability, and the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
  • X-Ship - By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear remains in precise alignment with the drive gear and stays in the same position under even the heaviest of loads. This eliminates friction between the spool shaft and gear which translates to better casting performance and increased gear durability.
  • Shimano Stable Spool Design (S3D) - S3D Technology utilizes a balanced and uniform thin wall aluminum spool to significantly reduce spool vibration and increase smoothness when casting and retrieving.
  • Super Free Spool - SFS was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. The pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing, which keeps the gear in perfect alignment with the spool shaft to eliminate friction for longer casts and smoother operation.
  • S A-RB Bearings - These bearings undergo the same anti-corrosion process as Shimano’s A-RB Bearings, with the addition of shields on both sides of the bearings to reduce the possibility of salt, dirt, or other foreign objects inhibiting the bearing’s rotation.

Awesome little reel. Super comfortable to palm and like all Shimano MGL spooled reel, It casts like a dream. I use my first one of these for light pitching and flipping with 50 lb braid and it does a great job. Plenty of drag for this application as well. This one will go on my 6'-6" medium Expride for a small squarebill/finesse reaction set up.
    Pros
    • It's a Shimano so it does exactly what is expected of it.

Paired this reel with a 6'6" Laguna Texas Wader II just for throwing 1/8-1/4oz Buggs lures and paddle tails. This is such a light setup, I can cast it accurately, and SO effortlessly, all day long.
    Pros
    • Lightweight, small, and comfortable in hand.
    • Casts light lures effortlessly, and has a super-smooth retrieve.

“AWESOME”. This reel is extremely smooth and lightweight. Spooled it with 12lb test PLine Floroclear for jerk-bait fishing. I own many other curado’s and this is by far my best. I highly recommend this real for throwing light weight baits.

    Smooth, easy casting reel

The last reel I bought was a Shimano Metanium XT Scorpion many years ago. This new Curado 70 MGL is way nicer and shockingly smaller than that JDM model! The micromodule gearing is oh so smooth! The handles are longer than I expected for such a small, palmable reel which I really appreciate. I've reeled in bass between 3 and 5lbs regularly with it including carp over 8lbs and had no issues with the drag and light line and leader. I liked it so much I ordered a second reel! The all matte black color has a tactical look that looks cool, too.
