I get to spend twice the time at the rail fishing jigs instead of live bait. Everyone should have a good selection of jigs before the leave the dock.

Not as small as I thought
March 25, 2022
Last summer I used Coltsniper jigs a bunch off southern California. Swim great, good colors, and were the hot ticket on most boats - the only jig that would get bit while everyone was fishing bait. When the traditional Irons were not drawing a strike, these still did. I have 80g and 100g models - but in the fall, the magic ticket on most trips were the 42g models. In my mind, I thought that size would be tiny - like a Kastmaster for trout. I was surprised when they arrived that they are longer than I imagined. When the bait fish are small, this is definitely my new go to size. Match the hatch or bait. Held up just as well on 20# fish that the 80g or 100g do. Swims just as well, casts much better than I thought something this light would. 42g in September would get bit while the 80g were ignored. You need to have more than one size in your jig box - and don't be afraid of the little guy!
Pros
  • Performs like the larger 80g or 100g
  • Solid build quality
  • Mimics smaller bait size
Cons
  • During the season, they can be hard to find!

I got the 42g candy iwashi, very happy with it. It casts really far, and the action is superb. Haven't had much luck with it though, but I will hold further judgment until I try other colors.

Great action for jig. Everything eats these lures from rockfish to 200lb plus bluefin tuna. A must need to have in your box from 42gram to 120gram. Most used are the 60gram to 80 gram. Blue and silver, green and silver will be key key colors to have but if you have to match the hatch then get some darker colors in essential sizes. Upgrade the treble hooks and split rings if you are going for large pelagic species.
Pros
  • Good action and fish eat them
Cons
  • Price

60gm great size for big BFT eating small bait
November 19, 2021
When the tuna go on the chew for small bait then this is the lure to toss at them. Upgrade the hooks and the split rings before you do this
Pros
  • Tosses a mile and retrieve and can also fish it on the drop. Gets eaten both ways it is fished
Cons
  • Expensive with poor hooks for big fish

Hot tuna lure

Small bait for big tuna. Just change out the trebles to larger and stronger single assist hooks and stronger split rings
Pros
  • Great action on retrieve and on the drop
Cons
  • Weak hooks for big Pelagic fish

Do these jigs swim.....say like a hopkins shorty when retrieved from the beach with a steady retrieve? Thanks.
1 Answer
Please follow these links to check out a couple videos on how the jig swims.... Thank you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CbSjIgC6U0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgTBoX4Enis It flutters (as shown in the second link), the flutter depends on how quickly or slowly you jig it and how erratically you lift and drop your rod. It seems to have a smoothness to its erratic style.

How do you suggest to fish these from the shore? Thank you.
1 Answer
These would be best used as a cast and fast retrieve to keep the lure off the bottom because they are fast sinking lures. If you are fishing a sandy bottom shore, you could use a slower jerk motion which creates a flutter off the sandy bottom.
