Shimano Calcutta B Featured Highlights

Cold Forged Aluminum Frame, Aluminum Sideplates and Aluminum Spool provide the strongest, tightest tolerances for excellent smoothness and legendary durability.

A-RB® (Anti-Rust Bearings) These specially treated stainless steel ball bearings are at least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings.

Variable Brake System (VBS®) uses centrifugal force rather than magnets to aid in controlling the cast for increased distance and adjustability.

Super Stopper® is a one-way roller bearing that eliminates backplay for solid hooksets.

Dartainium® Drag material provides a wide range of drag settings and the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.

Quick Take Down by unscrewing the 3 thumb screws the sideplate can be easily removed for maintenance or to adjust the VBS brake weights (2 screws on CT50).

Septon™ this handle grip material is soft to the touch and does not get slippery when wet.

Metal Series Metal frames keep moving parts in precise alignment for increased efficiency and durability.
Easy Access Sideplate by using a single thumb screw, the angler can open the sideplate and adjust the VBS without having to remove the spool from the reel (100 and 200 sizes only).

Assist Stopper is a back-up anti-reverse system that reduces the stress placed on the one-way roller bearing to increase durability (Not available on 50 & 100 sizes).

Lo-Mass™ Drilled Spool System reducing the weight of the spool by drilling lowers start-up inertia for more manageable casts (CT200GTB only).

Drilled Crossbar reduces the overall weight of the reel (CT200GTB Only).

Clicker increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm when a fish bites (400 & 700 sizes only).

3-Position Power Grip this Septon coated handle grip allows for 3 different hand positions for various fishing techniques (CT400BSV, CT700B & CT700BSV only).

SV Power Paddles The largest of the paddle grips provides extra fish fighting power when battling feisty inshore species (CT400B only).

Non-Disengaging Levelwind System allows the levelwind to track back and forth during the cast which reduces drastic line angles that cause unwanted friction and backlashes on wide-spool reels (CT400B & CT700B only).
Shimano Calcutta B Baitcasting Reels Shimano has redefined the entire Calcutta series; many of the proven innovations that Shimano has developed over the years have been incorporated into the new Calcutta B baitcasting reels.

This is easily the best reel I have ever owned. I have had one for around 15 years and never even had to get it serviced until year 12. It can definitely last a lifetime if properly taken care of. Just purchased another.

This reel is very smooth, casts like a bullet and fits perfectly in my hand. I bought it to handle big crankbaits of 1.5 and 2 ounces. It does the job without effort and in style. I also use it for my smaller swimbaits and glidebaits. The drag is very smooth and the perfect match when fishing treble hooks.

Great Plug and Diver pullers!

Go to reel for anadromous species hunting in the NW United States. These have just the right amount of line capacity t get it done in a guided environment, and allow for a 5 minute line change when a newbie gets spooled.....
Very durable, low maintenance, and not a bank breaker; yet ready for everyday use.
Solid choice, solid reputation, good price for a tough player. Shimano has never let me down.
Pros
  • Right capacity.
  • Drag works well, even if clamped down too much; forgiving reel.
  • Easy for anyone to use and learn.
  • Easy to maintain, with a TINY bit of maintenance.
Cons
  • Some say cost, think it is worth the money.

Perfection
December 18, 2017
I'm new to round reels and have loved this one since day one. It's weight and build quality are amazing and have shown how good they are time and time again. I've spooled it with 30lb braid and a 20lb fluorocarbon leader for saltwater fishing. It has been reeling buttery smooth and the brake on it is amazing. I did my research before buying and it hasn't let me down. If you're debating getting this reel, don't. Buy it and see for yourself how awesome it is!
Pros
  • Buttery smooth retrieve
  • Strong brake
  • Gorgeous finish
  • Decent line capacity
Cons
  • I can't really think of any

Would the 400b work well for livelining bunker for medium to 30lb striped bass in the NY/NJ region ?
1 Answer
Hi Jim, We do not recommend this reel as it is not the most ideal for livelining bait. We recommend looking at the Daiwa Saltist in the 15 or 20 size ( https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-saltist-star-drag-conventional-reels.html ) or the Avet MXJ as excellent options for your application( https://www.tackledirect.com/avet-mxj-g2-lever-drag-casting-reels.html ). Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with!

2- are they available for left hand retrive?

HI Wilson, The Shimano Calcutta B are intended for saltwater and can be used for saltwater fishing applications. Shimano only makes a Left Hand 201 model in the B series. However they do offer a 401A model in the Shimano Calcutta Conquest which is also rated for saltwater fishing. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-ctcnq401a-calcutta-conquest-baitcasting-reel.html Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. how much 20# braid can i fit on the 200 model? and would the Shimano TZCW70MHBLK Black Terez Waxwing Conventional Rod be a good match for this reel?

The Shimano Calcutta B CT200B Fishing Reel can approximately fit 260 yards for 20 lb braid and it would match up well with the Shimano TZCW70MHBLK Black Terez Waxwing Conventional Rod.

Would the Calcutta 400B be a good match for a St.Croix Tide Master TIC70HF Casting rod?
1 Answer
That would certainly be a very nice combo but I like knowing the actual application the rod and reel will be used for before saying it will work. Feel free to call or email in and speak with a member of the customer service team to confirm that this rod and reel will work for your application. From a balance and general feel standpoint that rod and 30 lb PowerPro will marry well with a Calcutta 400. -Paul

Can the Calcutta 400B be considered for a 30lb saltwater rig? What's a good 30lb rod to go with this reel?
1 Answer
You can use 30# braid on the Calcutta 400, but it is not a 30# class reel. It is a light saltwater reel. It would be great for Flounder, small to medium size Stripers, Bluefish, and Tog. The Lamiglas Tri Flex Inshore, Gloomis Pro-Blue, or St. Croix rods all would be great with that reel.
