the baitrunner is the absolute best reel in it's class. Smooth drag, great range of sizes. I own two 4000s, one 6000, and a 12000. Would buy one again without hesitation. Have landed everything from 10 lb channel cats to 6 ft lemon sharks, no problems
Pros
  • the baitrunner function is fantastic for bait fishing, even live bait with proper adjustments. Very smooth drag.

The OG bait fishing Spinning reel
January 18, 2022
These were originally designed by Shimano for Carp fisherman back in the 80's. It didn't take long before ALL bait fisherman realized the potential and great design and soon they were used world-wide for not only Carp but Saltwater and Freshwater species alike. There have since been many companies replicate the design and they work great as well, but Shimano will always be the Baitrunner kings in my eyes.

Excellent Reels
January 6, 2022
I love my Penn equipment but when it comes to baitfeeder type reels Shimano sets the bar in my book. These things were originally designed for Carp fishing but the Salty guys and us Catfishing fanatics know they kick butt for any kind of bait fishing.

This is absolutely the finest reel I have ever owned for surf fishing or other types of boat fishing. The bait runner is great and it's also durable and an all out great reel. I have over 26 setups in my basement of rod and reel combos and this reel is by far the best. I have 3 of them, 2 for me and one for my wife! Great Purchase, and Tackle Direct stands by it's product.
Pros
  • Bait Runner feature works better than any others. Attractive reel, if you are one of those people who dig what they are using. Casts like no other with 30 lb or 20 lb braid.
Cons
  • None that I can see

Must have reel for my lefties out there
November 18, 2019
So you want a conventional that’s quality in appearance and performance except it turns out they only come in righty most of the time. Look no further this reel is designed for you to have that live-bait running type reel so the fish doesnt feel tension when they run with your bait. The best part it’s a spinning reel that is from a quality company that has a great if not one of the best customer service I’ve ever experienced from

WIth the 10 foot rod I would pair it with the Shimano Ultegra ci4 5500 and for your pier setup a 6000 Penn clash would pair up with a 7 or 8 foot rod.

I’m considering getting one of these to put on a 7’ St. Croix Mojo Cat rod, would you recommend the 4000 or 6000? I’m leaning toward the 4000 since it is smaller and lighter. I will be using this setup mainly for carp.
1 Answer
I think the 4000 would pair up nicely with the St.Croix Mojo cat rod, my only concern is will the 15 pounds of drag handle the size carp your catching for that reason alone I would consider the 6000D.

It would pair well depending on the situation however it may be too much reel. I would recommend taking the step down to the 8000 size it will match the rod better.

Shimano does not provide the maximum line capacity for 30 lb braid on the 8000. You can count on getting around 320 yards.

That rod and reel should pair up together great. A 4000 size reel is generally the size that I would put on a light saltwater and freshwater rod.

Hello John. When you get a hit, you simply crank the handle and that sends the lever forward and disengages free spool allowing the spool to operate normally. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!
