The next generation of Shimano's flagship baitcasting series is here. The 2019 Shimano Antares combines unrivaled casting performance with an elegant and sophisticated design. Featuring Shimano's new MGL Spool III, an ultra-lightweight spool design with lower inertia for better overall casting performance, the Antares reels require little effort to cast and pitch light lures, while a high level of brake force is possible for long casts with heavier lures. Additionally, S3D Spool and SilentTune minimize bearing vibration for smoother and quieter casts. The Antares' magnesium Hagane Body provides lightweight rigidity unmatched in its class. X-Ship and MicroModule Gearing offer silky smooth rotation, while SVS Infinity braking allows for precision adjustments on the fly.

*Please note that the magnesium material used in the body of this reel makes it not suitable for use in saltwater environments.

You get what you pay for! This is one high quality reel. Casting and retrieve are light's out. The smoothest Baitcaster I've ever owned and that includes my Calais 100A which I love.
Pros
  • Castability, smoothness, clicking/precise drag. The quality of this reel IS better than my Met B from smoothness and drag consistency.
Cons
  • Price and weight. Although lighter than my Calais 100A I'm older now and wouldn't recommend for all day casting for us older folks.

If I coulld put only one reel in my boat this'd be it. Use mine for cranking mounted on a St. Croix Legend Glass. Retrieve is so smooth you won't believe. Noticibly lighter than my Calais and Calcutta reels. Dang, Got mine at a closeout sale. Dang they're still pricey. Not a finesse reel but for anything else this reel compares favorably to a Calais or Calcutta.
Pros
  • 1. Very, very, very smooth
  • 2. Obvious quality - just reeks of high end engineering
  • 3. Pleasure to use
  • 4. Tough as nails
  • 5. Fairly lightweight
  • 6. Beautiful to look at
Cons
  • 1. Very pricey
  • 2. Use this reel and you may not want to use anything else - it will spoil you rotten
