The Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 is the next generation of the original Ugly Stik that was introduced in 1976. Ugly Stik GX2 is a lighter feeling rod with the same toughness that makes the Shakespeare Ugly Stik a real workhorse.
  • Ugly Tech Construction - graphite and fiberglass construction create a strong, yet sensitive rod with better balance.
  • Ugly Tuff Guides - newly designed guides provide maximum durability.
  • Ugly Stik Clear Tip - delivers extra strength right where you need it and is sensitive to the lightest strike.
  • 7 Year Warranty

Great travel option

Did what I needed it to throwing spoons in the surf. Fit in checked bag on plane. No problems landing1-5 pound fish. Didn’t experience anything larger than that. Every 20 casts or so you need to push all the sections back together but not a huge deal. Did great with a 3000 reel, but if not in the surf 2000 would probably balance better
Pros
  • Portable

Ugly Stik pack rod

Great action for a four piece rod. I think the graphite content helps. Much better action than the fiberglass one it replaced.

I took a couple of these on a trip to Key West and they were exactly what I needed. Was able to handle some decent size fish with no problem and they fit perfectly in my luggage.

Great product, packs in suitcase nicely, good action on rod - only travel rod my husband will fish with, arrived on time for our trip to the keys. Tackle Direct is a great place to buy from, customer service is extremely responsive and helpful.

My 2nd Ugly Stik GX2 rod purchased this year
June 6, 2018
I have purchased an assortment of several generations of Ugly Stik rods over quite a few years. This Pack Rod (to me travel rod) model is a 6' - 4 piece is the 2nd GX2 I purchased in the past few months. The other is a 30" GX2 Ice Rod which is an upgraded version of the DockMaster I purchased so I could have a rod always set up and small enough to stow assembled and rigged in a stowage compartment of my Prius. Most of my opportunities for fishing involve either car or air travel. I spend months researching most gear and decided to opt for the 6' rather than 6'6" version to optimize the variety of carry-on bags this would fit into. I'm only 5'5" and am quite comfortable casting short rods. The biggest limitation for me is that for ease of casting my terminal tackle is best when shorter in length than my rod. I've had several 2000 size spinning reels on this Pack Rod with both mono and braid. The rod performance of the 4 piece rod is quite similar to my 1- and 2-piece GX2s. I haven't had the experience of catching multi-pound fish on this rod yet but my selection of the Medium power model should be suitable for catching everything from baitfish to bluefish using an assortment of lures, artificial, and live baits in fresh and saltwater, from the shore, docks, and boats. I have an assortment of about 10 travel rods and expect this to be one of my most commonly used rods primarily because of ease of transporting and having it with me just in case I have an opportunity to fish and the durability my other Ugly Stiks have demonstrated.
Pros
  • It is an Ugly Stik - I know I can rely on solid performance based on good design, quality materials, and durability.
  • This 6' USSP604M model is easy to stow and transport and assembles easily and performs well
  • Cost is a fraction of premium carbon fiber travel rods and much more durable
  • I'm just an average older fisherman, rod is light enough for me to cast for hours.
Cons
  • My premium travel rods may be left at home more as I expect this to become my go-to rod for most of my fishing travels.
