Tough and real light tip, easy to see bites amid the wave action. 9 and 10 food are great, not big and wieldy, nice 50/50 breakdown. 6oz handled nicely.
Pros
  • Action, tough, breaks down 50/50

Great Rod
April 7, 2017
Purchased the Shakespeare BWS 1101 on-line. Smooth transaction, item came as described, reasonable amount of time for shipping, the cardboard tube was ripped and re-taped, not the sellers fault. I was concerned about any damage to the rod, but everything seems fine. Like the action of the rod, very sensitive rod tip, tied a 10 pound weight to the line and picked it up with no problem. The five Fuji guides are very good, so is the tip top guide, and the Fuji reel seat is nice. The EVA grips feel good, though, kind of surprised that they weren't as big as my tiger rod grips, still nice though. Good price for the rod, if you can get it on sale makes it even better, Shakespeare has lots of new rods on the market now.
Pros
  • Fuji Reel Seat
  • Fuji Guides
  • Nice Blank
  • Nice Action
  • Almost Unbreakable
Cons
  • Grips are good, but the grips on the Shakespeare ugly stik tiger series, in my opinion, are much better, good for someone with smaller hands.

Hard to Go Wrong with an Ugly Stik
February 2, 2015
This is my fourth Ugly Stik -- bought it to go for stripers and sturgeon in the California Delta. It seems to be a very nice rod (haven't fished with it yet). I've got it paired with a Shimano Baitrunner 8000. I will reserve the fifth star until a catch my first keeper sturgeon on it.

Really tough rod!

Received this item as a birthday present along with a okuma avenger reel… Very tough rod. Used for pier fishing (crab snaring) and it holds up pretty well. holds up well even with 2 dungy crabs on the receiving end! Great Value for the money. Between this and the daiwa beefstick, i think i have 2 rods that should last me a while!

Loved This rod
December 22, 2014
I got this rod for my 12th birthday a few years ago and loved it, great feel, the medium heavy handled days were we caught over 50 big blue fish. Sadly, I got cut off on a wind knot and the second part of the rod went flying into the sea :(. It was a great rod and I plan on buying another one soon.
Pros
  • tip
  • flex
  • can handle big fish
Cons
  • pieces separated when I got cut off

Best store bought rod for the money
December 9, 2014
Been using these rods for years. You can't beat them for backbone mixed with sensitivity. They are practically indestructible. I use them for striper and hybrids in the lakes in my area. Also had to return one about four years ago and all I had to do was send it to Shakespere and they sent me a brand new one with no problems. By the way the rod was four years old at the time. I now own about twenty different ugly stik rods.
Pros
  • PRICE, QUAILITY, STRENGTH, WARRANTY
Cons
  • None

Great Rod for the Money.
February 26, 2014
I have two of these that myself and wife use to surf fish with and they are great. My wife can handle these 9 foot rods pretty easily and enjoys being able to cast her own lure. These rods can cast amazingly far, my guess would be almost three quarters of a football field with 3oz surf weight and 1oz of cut bait or shrimp. These are tough rods made to last and come with an excellent warranty.
Pros
  • Tough Rod.
  • Excellent Warranty.
  • Cast a long ways for their size.
Cons
  • Little bit on the heavy side.

Very good value

The rod arrived quickly and undamaged. The feel of the rod is very good. I feel that I got the best bang for the buck with this rod. I attached a Penn Battle 8000 on this stick and it feels great. I spent a little over $200.00 bucks for the set up and I couldn't be happier.

Will this be a good rod for plugging (throwing large plugs long distance) for blues from the rocks/coast in Maine? Can't tell if this model has the large guides for long distance casting or not or whether this is some sort of small guide equipped boat rod. Please advise!
1 Answer
The Shakespeare will work for your application. It is a bit on the heavy side though. Also consider the Tsunami Surf rod, model TSU-0001.

So I was looking at the Shakespeare BWS 10' spinning surf rod and noticed that the handle was letter "J" in the picture. I know this sounds dumb but I'm trying to be careful before I buy this. I noticed that the lowest guide on the rod (the only one that's visible in the picture) appears to be really small, like it would be on a casting rod. But I dont know if thats just an illusion from the angle that the picture was taken at or if the guides are really that small. So could you please verify if the guides are sized for a large spinning rod or they're small like it appears in the picture?
1 Answer
Yes, this rod is designed for a spinning reel.
