Sea Striker came through
April 24, 2021
Per my previous review after contacting Sea Striker about my fractured rods I found them to be very helpful and accommodating. They replaced the rods under warranty and had me return a couple so they could look at the problem, maybe new models have been changed.....Unheard of these days as most manufacturers would probably care less. I would change my previous review but cannot.. so here's another.
Hats off to Sea Striker.
Pros
  • If you have a problem they take care of it.

good value but needs better quality
October 27, 2019
I run a charter service and purchased 22 of these 30-80 lb stand ups. after 2 seasons 9 of them have fractured between the 4th and fifth eye down. Strange... same spot on all and I'm guessing the rest are not far behind. Maybe fine for someone who uses his a couple times a year but don't think I can waste money on any more. Bummed because they were solid glass and nice for the price. Thought they would compare to the old no longer made solid glass Penn Mariner that was bullet proof but no comparison.
Pros
  • look good, good hardware
Cons
  • don't last

good value
March 16, 2019
bought 16 SSU3080C Billfishers for my halibut charter business in Alaska. Decent rods although had 2 fail before 2 months. 1 had reel seat come loose, 1 had fiberglass fracture. I believe there is warranty but cost to return is too expensive from this other country so cannot comment on return service. For a private person I think these rods would be fantastic, well made ( if you can send back for warranty if needed ).
Pros
  • Good value for the price
  • Good components - gimbal end, eyes, reel seat
Cons
  • The gimbal end cap belongs on a chair leg in the kitchen, not on fishing pole... crap
  • The black color shows every scuff

Good Rod
July 16, 2018
Texas GOM trip paired with Penn US Senator 113 wide reel. Rod is very stout, durable and easy to handle. Caught several Kingfish and Amberjack up to 30lbs. Strong rod but with nice even bend distribution. Will buy another and use for Tuna this fall.

I personally own a lot of these and we abuse them and fish them hard. Solid rods, great quality and no problems in years of ownership.

Nothing fancy...Just a decent stand-up rod
August 5, 2014
I have not had a customer break one yet. But they did "chip" the first eye ceramic so bad that one of my brand new Blacktip shark Billfisher rods is now un-useable.
Yep, that's a good reason to NOT spend a bunch of money on a high dollar Stand-up rod. (I now need to get that eye replaced!!!!!)

But, like many "solid glass" rods with a taper in them. I am hoping it's truly "solid glass". REAL solid glass rods are almost impossible to find. But because they are supposed to be. That's why I bought these from Tackle Direct, who had a competitive price.
Pros
  • Simple, no frills (BS) nice turbo guides, slick butt WORK horse rods. The fish don't care how fancy they are.
  • Video LINK (cut & paste) of using these: http://youtu.be/GOv_67NUy2Q
Cons
  • With they came in 6 foot maybe...But that's not a con, really.

Simple, and effective....solid glass durability
July 8, 2014
I have 4-7' Penn Mariner solid glass rods I use for Shark fishing. But, it looks like Penn dropped the ball......AGAIN! And the solid glass Mariner rods, "the stand-up models" became hard to find or Penn stopped making them. BIG MISTAKE.

So, here comes SeaStriker to the rescue, with the Billfisher model. THANK YOU SEASTRIKER!

Shark fishing with charter customers, Solid Glass durable rods, GO HAND IN HAND!

Day one out with customers with these rods was July 4th. And they easily put a few 50-100 pound Blacktip sharks to the boat.
Pros
  • Simple, and durable. Good eyes. Nice No frills glass, short, stand-up rods.
Cons
  • Have not found any yet......if I do. I'll be sure to re-do a review

EXACTLY, what I wanted.
July 6, 2014
Since it seems PENN dropped the ball and is too good to be making the SOLID GLASS standup Mariner rods any more (?) In which I have 4 of in 7 foot, and use for BIG Sharkin. I wanted some shorter rods for my charter customers. In which many are kids and smaller people all summer long, and they can barely handle the Blacktip Sharks behind the shrimp boats outside the inlet and need a lighter 30# setup. For the smaller sharks.

Pros
  • SOLID GLASS + SHARK FISHING= Makes me happy!
  • Good guides
  • NO glitz, NO glamour
  • Decent price for a simple stand-up that over time I hope holds up.
Cons
  • If you like Fancy..these may not be for you.

Sleek and tough
April 3, 2014
Although I haven't used this rod yet, it appears to be perfect for trolling heavier lures like umbrella rigs and the like. The rod is well balanced and the fore-grip tapers nicely making a smooth transition to the rod. The price was 1/2 of comparable rods.
Cons
  • None

Can I replace the straight butt on my rod with a short curved butt?
2 Answers
Hello Kenneth. Unfortunately the butts on these particular rods are fixed and cannot be changed. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

You can buy an aftco unibut which is removeable and can accommodate both straight or curved butts.you can order them in short or long lengths. Take the rod to any rod builder and they will replace the parts for you.The total cost should be around $50 to $75.
