When you compare this reel to others within the same class, this reel either has more line capacity, more drag power, bigger handle or all the above. Casts really smooth. I love the brake system on these reels and the clicking tension knob is a huge plus. The HD has set itself apart. Now the downside: I would not buy this reel for its msrp, look for it on sale. The dumb bar is pretty flimsy and does not give a loud click. However, performance wise I have had zero issues with this reel and have landed dozens of large game. Paint chips off easily after heavy use.

Can one safely use this reel in the inshore salt 100 percent of the time for your typical striper, reds, specs, flounder and blues without sacrificing its integrity? I understand it has the "Saltguard Protection" however, on the Quantum website, a question was asked similar to my question and the answer given by the Quantum rep was that this reel is made for fresh water. I am confused as to it's true purpose in life, whether it is a fresh or a salt water reel or even a mixture of both?

So although the Quantum rep said this reel is designed for fresh water use, they do incorporate some salt resistant features, so you CAN use this reel in both fresh and saltwater, but proper care and maintenance is key to preserving this reel for extended salt water use.

I would recommend looking into the Shimano Tranx 200 or 300 models if you are worried about this reels longevity in the saltwater applications
