Reel of a Lifetime
January 6, 2022
If you don't need fancy schmancy reels but you do need a workhorse, the Penn Senator series is for you. If taken care of these reels will outlast you and help put the meat on the deck if you do your part.

Quality made reel

Penn reels are well made. You can tell the people at Penn take pride in their products. Definitely would buy again however they last a lifetime of abuse.

I have hundreds of hours on my Senators and they have never given me any problems. I have a bunch from the 80s too. Great reels.

Nice to see made in the U.S.A again under Penn's name
March 26, 2019
We all Know Senators are true workhorse reels. we all know what they are capable of handling, and if you do not, just go and ask the old timers and they will tell you that Penn is the best. Nobody wanted to see the manufacturing moved to where quality is a secondary concern over price, and this rightfully annoyed a lot of loyal customers.

Howell Michigan
Fantasy Trip!
February 24, 2018
Ok it's been a very long winter, and I have not had the opportunity to actually confront the "Great White" that haunts our 26 acre pond here in Howell Michigan. Fantasy set aside...At first impression it appears to be made very well and extremely competent to handle anything that roams the Seven Seas, This coming summer (God Willing) I hopefully will be able to put it to a mighty test in the absolutely wonderful beaches of Panama City.
Pros
  • Formidable and apparently powerful for the beast that dwells silently in the abyss, Or something like that...And a great talking piece when the fishing crews arrive to break bread and tell mighty tales of wooden ships and men made of iron...Or something like that...
Cons
  • Don't know yet!

13ft 2inch Hammerhead Shark
July 11, 2016
1st time out caught a 13ft2inch Hammerhead shark from the beach on vacation.I took baits out by kayak about 450 yards, shark took another 400 yards on its 1st run.I had the star drag on full during that run.The reel heated up so hot that I had to dump water on reel and line...and it just sizzeled like bacon it really was unbelievable.I'm gonna buy another soon.I can't say enough great things about this reel. For land based shark fishing it's my 1st choice.Shark was tagged and released.
Pros
  • Line capacity, reliability, big gearing, heavy duty construction and it's the reel from JAWS!!

Trusty Workhorse
April 28, 2016
The 12/0 is beefy but manageable. I think the majority will be able to fish with this without having to be strapped in (depending on the rod you couple this with of course). Therefore making it perfect for grouper and/or shark fishing off a boat. It has enough drag to stop most 300-400 pound groupers from diving into the wrecks, but also holds enough line to accommodate the long runs taken by 10 foot + sharks (you won't have to anchor up to chase them down as often). The reel has few moving parts hence few points of failure. Basic maintenance will likely keep this reel catching fish for decades. 12/0's are what I usually fish with while on a boat and have had great success with them (largest grouper - give of take 500lbs / largest shark - 13ft). I like them so much I just bought another one.

Great Big Gamefihing Reel
September 28, 2014
I own several of these reels in both this 14/0 and 18/0 for my Charter Boat Business and we use them pretty hard for cranking in big fish. They are very reliable, but if one does have a problem shipping it back to the Penn Factory for a rebuild has a very quick turn around time.

great reel
January 8, 2014
I love this reel. Smooth drag and lots of line capacity. I put it to the test against a big tiger shark and it held up great. I recommend ALL Penn Senator reels.
Pros
  • Smooth drag and lots of line capacity.
Cons
  • It's a heavy reel which can make fighting a large fish from a standing position hard.

Awesome Reel Penn Senator 117L
March 21, 2013
Awesome reel! Bought this reel to replace a smaller reel that wasn't quite up to speed for the fish in the south Pacific. But the Penn Senator 117 was up to the challenge right out of the box. On March 12, 2013, was the first day I used the reel for trolling and it caught 3 big Mahi Mahi and 3 big Wahoo (Ono) each wieghing between 25 and 40 pounds each. The reel was extremely smooth.
Pros
  • Easy to set Drag
  • Holds a ton of 130lbs Mono
  • Good sturdy handle which makes it easy to reel
Cons
  • The reel is big and a bit heavy, but that does not detract from the value and experience.

What rod would be best for the 117l reel that tackle direct sells?
1 Answer
Depends on the type of fishing, either straight butt or bent butt. The TackleDirect Platinum Hook Conventional Standup Rods are a really good choice.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an E-glass rod under 300 bucks compatible with the 12/0 or 14/0  with a large enough reel seat? I plan on doing some land based shark fishing and would prefer a rod in the 8-9 ft range without having to go custom if possible...thanks on any advice!
1 Answer
The Okuma Cedros A series rods would be a solid option at an affordable price point and would fit your reel choices. Only available it 6' or 6'6".

Is this reel big enough for Goliath Grouper?
2 Answers
The reel has more that enough line capacity and with the low gear ratio will have plenty of pulling power to get them off the bottom.
Submitted by: Customer Service on May 1, 2012
To answer your question (yes) just make sure you match the reel with a equaly heavy rod. Rod in Texas.
