This is honestly my go to reel from fluke to pitching for Mahi Mahi and I LOVE IT !!!!!!
January 9, 2019
I have mine set up on a Tsunami Trophy jigging rod rated for 30lb - 100lb and spooled with 65lb braided and the thing is a beast. Fluke, no problem. 15lb blues, no problem. 30+ stripers, no problem. Mahi Mahi, never had an issue. Ive even boated a brown and thresher shark which were around 3 feet and 100lbs each on this reel, and it did it with ease. My only complaint is that the line release button can stick sometimes, which is quite annoying.

Pros
  • Great all around reel that performs bigger than what is advertised or what you pay for it. Beautifully made reel that is just solid and will not disappoint.

This reel delivers!

I was skeptical to use for surf fishing, concerned with issues of tangling after casting. However after a couple of adjustment, the back-slash was under control. I use it on my 11', but may do as well, if not better on longer poles in launching the load. Very impressive.
Pros
  • Smooth drag. Solid construction.
Cons
  • A bit heavy for all-day use. Recommend placing on a sand spike.

My favorite light tackle jigging reel and a magnificent fluke reel to boot. Takes braid with no issues. Have pried 25 pound stripers off the bottom jigging with this reel.

Worth the tariff.

Simply Outstanding....which they should be considering the tariff

I own two of these reels, the 965 and the 975CS. By far the best Penn reels I've ever owned. Use them for light tackle jigging and for fluke fishing...I especially like the 975CS for fluke fishing as you can easily control the release of extra line with your thumb after the initial bite. Have pried 40 inch stripers off the bottom of the Chesapeake with no issue. Have owned the 965 for almost 11 years, it is made like a tank. Both handle 20-30 pound braid with no ill effects. Only wish they were cheaper...

A solid product

This reel is solid, well built with the feel of a larger, more expensive product. The drag is smooth and the operation easy. It's comfortable to use and effective for a wide range of targets, from flounder to striped bass and blues. This reel will get a lot of use, for sure.

1 Answer
The reel will be to small for tuna other then maybe false albacore but would be fine for bass, the max drag is 12lbs
