Great solid fishing reel
January 29, 2019
I own 2 Penn International 50vsw's. This is a great multipurpose reel. I use it for offshore tuna and sword fishing. II would suggest putting a few hundred yards of 80/100lb braid and finishing off with 200 yards of mono. Only downside is the weight of this reel, without offshore experience this reel can burn you out.
Pros
  • Great drag, it can stop a huge sword fish in its tracks.
Cons
  • The fishing reel weight.

Penn International 70VS Great Reel

Super reel, great power and Penn bulletproof durability.
TD service is superb and Don goes out of his way to make the deal work!
I worry more about jaws breaking my rod holders than reel failure.
Pros
  • Power and durability
Cons
  • A little heavy but I never notice when the adrenaline is pumping

This is the second International 50 that i buy so this time went for the 2 speed.
It's reliable as only a Penn can be with plus of that second speed to help fight the big ones.
It's what i'll keep buying from now.

Penn 50VSW Reel

I bought two INTERNATIONAL V 50VSW, to replace my 1980's 50SW, these are my main workhorse Trolling rigs. Great freespool, heavy drag when needed, all around fighting reels. They are built to last, the lever drag and two speed button are great for switching it up as you fight that fish. smooth and easy drag control right at your thumb. and that unmistakable clicker when that Wahoo strikes your bait is Awesome! I run these on Chaos 30-80 rods with Jerry Brown 80lb braid with a 50lb mono top shot. great setup for heavy trolling.
Pros
  • Smooth Drag through the whole range, built to last a lifetime. Strong big handle to fight any fish, and two speed reeling to bring in line fast when you need to. Heavy Duty frame and sideplates withstand those rough days!
Cons
  • Cost is a little high, but we'll worth it. if you clean and oil them, they will last a lifetime and hold value!

Top Reel

After a great deal of research into the various reels in the 50 class this is what I settled on. It has proven itself a winner as it is extremely tough and reliable. Very little maintenance is required, just wash it down (lightly with fresh water, a strong spray will push salt and grime into the reel) and get an end of the year service every couple of years and this reel will last you a lifetime. A little expensive but you can't go wrong with this reel.
Pros
  • very tough
  • very reliable
  • low maintenance
Cons
  • expensive

Looking for a rod for Penn 50VSW reel with a detachable curved butt or better with both curved and straight butts; a Penn rod would be a plus but not a must
1 Answer
Unfortunately we do not have any options that currently offer both a straight and bent butt. You would most likely have to pick one and then order the other butt separately.
