The Penn Warfare Level Wind Reels were engineered to be an all around reel that is versatile and of course at a great price. These reels feature a lightweight graphite frame and sideplates with aluminum frame rings for improved rigidity to prevent frame-flex. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers provide smooth drag under heavy loads. No need to question how much line you have left when fighting a fish, the line capacity rings answers this for you.

  • Lightweight graphite frame and sideplates
  • Forged and machined aluminum spool
  • Machined brass main and pinion gear
  • HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers
  • Instant Anti-reverse bearing
  • Line capacity rings
  • Instant anti-reverse bearing

Great Charter Reel
February 13, 2021
I run a charter boat on eastern Long Island. Most of my fares are tourists with little fishing experience. These level wind reels keep knots & backlashes to a minimum so I can concentrate on fishing & not endless knots. They also take a beating throughout the season and require little maintenance.
Pros
  • Less knots & backlashes with inexperienced fishermen.
  • Take a beating every day with little maintenance.

Not one of Penns better products
December 30, 2018
These graphite reels were not meant to last when used regularly. Graphite has a flex to it, so while fighting a decent sized fish, can cause the internals to become out of line causing stress and wear on them much quicker than an aluminum reel. Bearing and gear misalignment are your major enemies when it comes down to it with graphite frames, the flex just allows too much movement. Spend the extra cash and get an aluminum frame, you will be thankful 15 yrs down the road when it's still going strong as the day you bought it.

bad line counter

bad line counter
I have purchased several Penn reels in the past, none of which have had line counters.
Recently I purchased two WAR30LWLC reels and neither of them had a working line counter that
you could rely on. The reels themselves are great so what I did was to purchase the parts needed
to remove the line counter from the reel and used metered braided line to verify the depth.
I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PENN REEL WITH A LINE COUNTER.
In addition I contacted Penn’s customer service but had to leave a message but I’ve never
received a call in return. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
Pros
  • The reel itself is good.
Cons
  • really unreliable line counter!!!

Good Cheap Trolling Reel
November 10, 2017
I grabbed this to add another trolling rod to my setup. I had a rod I really wasn’t using and the reel went on it and could not be repaired. Based on the price point and having the smaller version warfare I decided to grab this while it was on sale. I couldn’t be happier.

For the money you can’t beat it

I use this real for bottom fishing for fluke sea bass and even light trolling for stipers. This reel is a good all around versatile piece of equipment at a cost everyone can afford. If your just looking to get into fishing or building your arsenal. This is a good grab.

Is this real fully sealed. Can it be submerged in saltwater? What are your recommendations for a good rod size and action to pair with the WAR15LW? Looking for an all around setup that can tackle some pier fishing, some inshore fishing, and freshwater catfish.
1 Answer
Hi David, The Penn Warfare Level Wind Reels are not fully sealed and are not recommended to be submerged in saltwater. For your fishing application I would recommend a Penn CARINIII1530C70 Carnage III Inshore Casting Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-cariniii1530c70-carnage-iii-inshore-casting-rod.html This would pair well with a Penn Warfare 15LW conventional reel and be great for catfish, inshore, and pier fishing applications.
