The Penn Warfare Star Drag Reels were engineered to be an all around reel that is versatile and of course at a great price. These reels feature a lightweight graphite frame and sideplates with aluminum frame rings for improved rigidity to prevent frame-flex. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers provide smooth drag under heavy loads. No need to question how much line you have left when fighting a fish, the line capacity rings answers this for you.

  • Lightweight graphite frame and sideplates
  • Forged and machined aluminum spool
  • Machined brass main and pinion gear
  • HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers
  • Instant Anti-reverse bearing
  • Line capacity rings
  • Instant anti-reverse bearing

Good reel for beginner or novice?
September 18, 2019
I got this reel for my dad.
He probably does fishing once in a while.
He caught more than 5 yellowtail from the last trip.
He said that the reel was a little heavy but durable.
Pros
  • Ok for beginner
  • But go for Fathom if you are above novice level.
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Spool is huge
  • corrosion issues

Not one of Penns better products

These graphite reels were not meant to last when used regularly. Graphite has a flex to it, so while fighting a decent sized fish, can cause the internals to become out of line causing stress and wear on them much quicker than an aluminum reel. Bearing and gear misalignment are your major enemies when it comes down to it with graphite frames, the flex just allows too much movement. Spend the extra cash and get an aluminum frame, you will be thankful 15 yrs down the road when it's still going strong as the day you bought it.

Great Reel for the Money!

I run a college fishing club in Virginia that is primarily focused on freshwater fishing, in particular, fly fishing for trout in the mountains. Thus I was caught off-guard when the kids expressed an interest in saltwater fishing.

I quickly realized that few had any saltwater experience, let alone any equipment, so I went about assembling several "loaner" combos to supplement my old arsenal of tackle that I'd hauled down from NJ when I relocated to VA years ago.

I should note that I typically buy upper-end fishing tackle. If not the best, as close as I can get to it, within the bounds of my financial reality.

Were these reels for my use, I would have purchased a more expensive model, but as "loaners" for a bunch of college kids, they're perfect. Good enough to last for many years, but not so expensive that I would suffer a heart attack should one accidentally get lost over the side.

My 4-star rating reflects my overall assessment of the reels when compared to the rest of the Penn line and is not intended as criticism. If you're looking for high-end equipment, move on up scale, but if you want a nice quality, affordable reel for occasional saltwater fishing trips, or to equip younger family members, it's hard to beat the Penn Warfare Series.
Pros
  • Nicely made and affordable.
Cons
  • Light-weight construction.
  • In truth, the light-weight construction likely reflects design improvements.
  • It's just hard for a 60+ year-old ex-NJ party boat fisherman that grew-up using his dad's and grandfather's Penn Long Beach and Senators to accept.

Large line capacity and a smooth drag, it's also very resistant to corrosion as well. One of my new favorites. I would highly reccomend this reel.
Pros
  • Large line capacity, smooth drag.
Cons
  • You won't want to use any other reel.

would this reel be good to use from a party boat for blackfish combined with a penn 7 ft battalion rod if not what penn reel would you recommend
1 Answers
I think that would be a good combo, but for deeper wreck fishing you may desire a bit heavier of a rod. If you give us a call or send us an email to sales@tackledirect.com we should be able to help you pick out the perfect combination.
