Anglers needing a rugged spinning reel for heavy saltwater angling can rely on the new Penn Torque spinning reel in three sizes for any briny situation. With this USA-made reel, shark and striper chasers can take to the Montauk surf with size 5 bucktails and spoons while Miami anglers can handle the tackle testing sailfish and tarpon. In the Gulf, yellowfins and cobia will be no match. Fully sealed, saltwater and sand simply can’t get into the fully machined aluminum body, the 7+1 stainless steel bearings and the patented Versa-drag. The oversized HT-100 Versa-Drag system allows for multiple drag settings to match everchanging fishing situations. Available in classic Penn gold or the new black with gold accents, the Torque features an integral clutch sleeve to eliminate any back play of the rotor, one-piece aluminum frame with forged aluminum spool and sideplates, and a rugged one-piece handle arm. The 100% stainless steel bail features a unique system under the rotor where the angler can choose between automatic or manual trip at the touch of a switch. The high capacity spool is braid ready, which means the reel is built to withstand the strains that braided lines put on a reel.

Great Reel!
December 26, 2018
Presently own two 5's, 7, and one 9. They are all absolutely wonderful reels. The fit and finishes are great and all mechanical parts work perfectly! Used in both fresh and saltwater without a single problem. With reasonable care, they should last several lifetimes.

  • None!

The Torque advantage

I have a black bailess a bulk bailed and a gold bailed. I freaking love these reels. They will stop any fresh water fish and last several life times. I also have a Torque 7 bailed and just gave my son my Torque 9 bailess. Sparking with my 7 son was so jealous he just had to have my 9.

I own a Van Staal, Zeebaas and now, a Torque 5 Bail less. I like the Torque a lot. It's paired with a St. Croix Avid 9ft. Very nice reel.

My husband had been looking in to this reel for a while, so I got it for him for his birthday and he was ecstatic. He says it's the best quality reel he's ever owned so I will take his word for it!

VERY VERSATILE FOR BIG FISH
April 10, 2015
ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE SPINNING REEL. IVE DUNKED IT , DROPPED IT AND IT STILL DOESN'T MISS A BEAT. I THINK ITS A MUST FOR EVERY GUY WHO FISHES JETTIES FOR SNOOK REDS AND STRIPERS.
Pros
  • IT DOES EXACTLY WHAT ITS ADVERTISED TO DO. AND THE PRICE IS MORE APPEALING THAN THE OTHERS OF ITS CLASS
Cons
  • NONE WHATSOEVER

It's up there...

I have a Saltiga, old Penns, Zeebaas, and this reel is up there. I'll say this though, I feel the bail wire is a bit flimsy. I sent my Torque 5 to Penn, and had it converted to bailess. In no way, does the bail feel as solid as the Saltiga. I also hated the handle, and installed a power knob. Now it looks better. I like this reel so much, I'm already saving up for a Torque 5 bailess black.
Pros
  • Rock solid
Cons
  • Not as smooth as my Saltiga

Best reel I've ever used
December 6, 2013
I've been fishing for 30+ years and never spent the money on a quality reel. I've never had the money to buy much more than your average proced real at a sporting good store but love fishing so I figured I'd treat myself seeing that I'm really getting into this surf fishing since moving to long island this year. As soon as I felt this rell I knew it would be love at first cast. You can see and feel the quality. I am partial to PENN having grown up in Philly. Casts great, feels good in your hands and handles fish no problem although most of the big fish moved out by the time I got it.

Strong, smooth and waterproof
July 14, 2013
I am in my third season of fishing the Penn Torque 5 Spinner. It is a fantastic reel. The drag is strong and smooth. It starts quickly and easily and puts constant pressure on powerful hard running fish. It lays line very well and casts like a dream. I have never had a wind knot with it. There has been no water intrusion in either the drag or gear box.
Pros
  • Strong, smooth and waterproof
