Penn TORQUE Star Drag Reels come standard with a 6.0:1 gear ratio for rapid line retrieve. However you may find the need for a lower gear ratio in certain fishing situations, for example: bottom fishing where power is more important than speed. For these situations the Penn Versa-Gear System allows you to easily purchase and install a 5.4:1 or 4.8:1 ratio.

Overall, this reel feels very solid. I caught a few large amberjack with a torque 20 mounted on a star plasma jigging rod and 80lb braid. The drag was very smooth even with substantial pressure applied. Penn and Tackle direct both understate the inches per crank number on the site and box. It's really in the high 30's to 40" per crank which works great for jigging. I have not tried the versa gear yet but I intend to the next time I bottom fish in water less than 200'. I'm curious to see if a lower ratio will help alleviate my one complaint with this reel. I have found that most reels with an offset gearbox tend to make the rod roll in your hand while reeling under strain and this one does as well. I strongly recommend either wearing a glove on your rod hand or using a gimbal belt with this reel to minimize the roll and minimize the amount of fighting you have to do with the rod while fighting a larger fish.
Pros
  • Strength, smooth drag, retrieve speed
Cons
  • Tends to roll the rod under strain

For this reel I like the Blue Water Carnage Series. They are lightweight and powerful which is perfect for what you get with the Torque reel. If you plan on Jigging and bottom fishing then check these out ---> http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-carjg65100c62-bluewater-carnage-jigging-conventional-rod.html For light trolling, baiting and bottom fishing check these out. ---> http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-carbw3080c66-bluewater-carnage-conventional-rod.html If you have any other questions please feel free to call or email in and speak with one of our customer service representatives. -Paul W.
