Really Really Good
December 13, 2020
This is a solid entry level setup. Ive got mine spooled with 50lb power pro and a top shot of 65lb power pro. Ive caught anything from little whiting all the way up to a 7ft 150lb lemon shark off the beach. All around good setup.
Pros
  • Price, and smooth drag from the spinfisher.
Cons
  • Rod is not very durable, some of the eyelet inserts started to break and fall out. Rod still performs great though.

Great rod and reel for surf fishing
October 17, 2018
I have the 10' rod and it's perfect for casting beyond the surf. Also works great for getting the line above the waves while in a rod holder. The reel is great and strong enough for pretty much anything you will catch. I have 80lb braid on it.

Penn SSV6500 10ft surf combo
July 27, 2016
Bought this combo for the cape cod canal and the rhode island beaches and breachways. It was by far the best fishing investment I've ever made. It casts effortlessly as far as you have the skills to throw it, and the retrieve is so smooth. Have caught a few stripers in the high 40 pound range and you could definitely catch fish much larger with no problems. Highly recommended.
Pros
  • Casting Ability, Smooth Retrieve, looks like a rolex
Cons
  • none

Penn Spin

I've been using Penn products for 30 years and they still have the workmanship. The rods tube wrapped handles are easy to grip and the light weight composite loads and casts well. And nothing else on the market I've used, cranks in line like a Penn reel.
Pros
  • Quality, modern materials and light weight. Nice aesthetics and strong combo for all surf, fish size ranges.
Cons
  • None.

Can’t wait for Spring

Just bought this combo - the Spinfisher 6500 just feels like powerful, but effortless. Went with 150 yards 20# mono topped off with 140 yards of 50# power pro moss green. The rod is heavy power, good for bait and heavy lures. I may look at an 8 or 9 ft. Medium power for some of my lighter plugs.
Pros
  • one of the best overall reels for surf
  • rod well suited for fishing bait and heavier lures in strong currents
Cons
  • rod might not be best choice for lighter plugs like SPs/Bombers

Excellent combo

Just bought this Penn rod/reel combo from Tackle Direct. Great customer service and fast shipping. I bought this combo to surf fish the beach here in Destin Florida. I rigged the reel with 300 yards of 50# Power Pro moss green braided line and a 5' 50# fluorocarbon leader casting a 3oz pyramid lead sinker and live shrimp. I was more than satisfied with the smooth powerful casting ability of the rod and the the reel retrieve is outstanding, you can immediately feel the power of the SSV6500 gear box in action. Smooth micro adjustable sealed drag and sealed bearings makes for easy clean up when the fishing done.

David, Thank you for answering my last question so promptly and clearly. Of course, since you brought it up, now I have to ask which 9' surf rod you recommend for the SSV4500 based on your previous answer (hopefully, something around the same price if possible)? Thanks again, -Dave

If you want to keep it around the same price range, I would recommend the St Croix Triumph series. When I first started using lures, I was using the SSV 4500 with that rod and I liked it. I think that it balances perfectly and I caught a good amount of fish on it before I upgraded to a different 9 foot rod. Here is a link to the rod: http://www.tackledirect.com/tsrs90m2.html

Hello, What is the approximate weight of this combo? I am looking for something to cast and retrieve lures in the surf all day. Thanks!
1 Answers
The approximate weight of the combo is just over two pounds. Personally, I feel like it would be a bit heavy if you were going to be throwing lures all day. I use a Spinfisher V 4500 on a 9 foot rod for throwing lures on the beach and jetty.
