Penn designed the Squall Lever Drag reels with function and ergonomics at the top of the list. The lever drag does not protrude above the frame of the reel. This means there is no way for the line to loop over and hang up on the lever of the Squall Lever Drag.
  • Lightweight graphite frame and sideplates
  • Forged and machined aluminum spool
  • High-strength marine grade bronze main and pinion gear
  • Dura-Drag washers virtually eliminate hesitation, even underextreme drag settings
  • Switchblade harness lugs (50 & 60 sizes only)
  • Ratcheted drag lever prevents ''drag creep'' caused by hours of trolling and vibrations
  • Line Capacity Rings
  • 5+1 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Instant anti-reverse bearing with silent back up ratchet
Penn Squall Lever Drag Innovative Features:
  • Versa-Handle System - Are you bottom fishing or trolling? Are you looking for power or speed? Penn's Versa-Handle System allows the angler to choose how long the handle should be in less than a minute; tools are included with each reel. Assemble the reel in the long position for more power; assemble in the short position for more speed, your choice.
  • Line Capacity Rings eliminate the question of how much line you have left when fighting a fish. The three lines on the spool flange let you know when you have 1/3rd, 2/3rd, or a full spool of line. Also if you respool often these lines give you a benchmark for backing your superlines with monofilament which will help eliminate wasted time and line.
  • Switchblade Harness Lugs give you all the benefits of traditional lugs without the risk of grabbing loose line and potentially breaking off fish. When the lugs are not in use they remain flush with the reel frame, when you need them they easily pop up with the tip of your finger. The other benefit of the proprietary Switchblade harness lugs is basic ergonomics. Let’s face it, harness lugs can be uncomfortable when you are palming the reel on the cast or retrieve. If you don’t plan to use the lugs then stow them in the down position and you have one of the most ergonomic reels on the market. Included on 50 & 60 sizes only.

Perfect Reel

I bought this reel after going back and forth with TLD 25s. Has more drag and line capacity plus a little cheaper. Lets hope Penn's name holds up as good as Shimano's does.

I've used this reel for bunker chunking for striped bass and blues. Great quality but the drag could be better. Also use it to troll mojo and bunker spoons.

Smooth and built to, last!

Just returned from a Fishing trip out of Pt. Aransas ,Texas.
Caught the limit of Four Red Snapper in the State Waters .
We have a 12 Month Season.
The four Snappers weighed 44 pounds..these are big ,big Snappers.
Reel pulled these big fish up from 150 feet.+The Lever Drag is so smooth..
You control the fish and not the other way around.
Set the drag for the fish you are fishing for,the lever sets the drag you need to land the big fish
Perfect reel for all Salt Water Fishing...I have it set on a med-Heavy Penn Tournament 6' rod.
Pros
  • Light Weight..User Friendly....Easy Controls..
Cons
  • none

This reel is very trustworthy; it helped me catch my first bluefin tuna exceeding 80lbs with no problem. This reel is half the price of other brand reels on the market.

I'm looking at this for a reel to use for puget sound halibut and possibly ling cod.  Sizwwise, would 40 work, or do I need to move up to a 50?  Thank you
1 Answer
50 will give you edge over the 40 in line capacity, I would suggest that.

Hey, i am looking to do some king fishing off piers this summer with the trolley rig and I've never used the trolley rig before. I know how to make the rig and the clip but i dont have a fighting reel. I'm a teenager and ive been fishing since i was 3. I'm on a budget and i was looking for a conventional reel and rod that is not expensive, but will last. Thankyou!
1 Answer
The Penn SQL30LD Squall would be a good option for a moderately priced reel for using trolley rigs. As far as rods go, I would take a look at the Shimano TLC70MHBBL Tallus Blue Water Conventional Rod, which is priced at $159.99 and would be a great option for your scenario.

where is this reel made ? Ever since Penn moved their manufacturing to China, the product has proven to be inferior.
1 Answer
These reels are made in CHINA. This reel is fine and on par with the competition.
