Have a couple, a smaller one for togging and a larger one for trolling stripers. Both have held up well and kick butt

Freezes up under continued stress.
October 10, 2021
Bought a SQL50LW a couple months ago.
Good reel, but there there is a tendency for the reel to heat up and freeze.
When bottom fishing, a sinker (6+ ounces) and/or a fighting fish can cause the reel to start heating up and freeze.
When that happens, the only option is to "hand line" your fish (or rig) and reel the line in as you do so.
Once the reel cools off, it operates as usual.

May have to contact Penn Intl as I may have a defective reel.

bought this reel for some trolling rods to replace the old style penn reels i had. once i removed it from the box it was evident this ant your granddaddy's penn reel. this thing is smooth has an incredible drag nice loud clicker to let you know when its time to heat your blood. i do not have any complaints with this reel just be careful when you order pay close attention to the model number the LH on the end is a left hand reel. also i might add tackle direct had 7 of these reels sitting on the porch before i could get the boat warmed up. 5stars

Penn Squall 50LW
July 10, 2020
Use these reels with 65# Lead core line for trolling for Stripers. It has performed well bringing in 50# +/- fish. Good reel for the application I use it for.
Pros
  • Level wind (use it for lead core line).
  • Good, sturdy handle and crank.

Excellent Reel for the price.
May 21, 2020
This Penn SQL30LW is a good reel at a good price. It is lighter than most expensive reels and has all the same features. The level wind also works while in free spool which is different than most. I feel this prevents the line from twisting and friction. Ordering and shipping from Tackle Direct was not issue at all.

Not one of Penns better products
December 30, 2018
These graphite reels were not meant to last when used regularly. Graphite has a flex to it, so while fighting a decent sized fish, can cause the internals to become out of line causing stress and wear on them much quicker than an aluminum reel. Bearing and gear misalignment are your major enemies when it comes down to it with graphite frames, the flex just allows too much movement. Spend the extra cash and get an aluminum frame, you will be thankful 15 yrs down the road when it's still going strong as the day you bought it.

Do you think the sql15lw would be good for ling cod and Yellow eye rock fish? If so do you think 200yd of 30 pound braid and the remaining space topped of with 25 pound mono would be good?
1 Answer
Yes, plenty of line capacity loading it with 30 pound braided line I would use a 40 pound mono topshot.

What is the difference between a squall and squall 2
1 Answer
Hi Barry, The Penn Squall II Level Wind Conventional Reels have a Fast Access Side Plate, 3 + 1 Shielded Stainless Steel Ball Bearings, and also feature a higher drag rating on all models. The Penn Squall Level Wind Reels do not have a Fast Access Side Plate, all have 2+1 Shielded stainless steel bearings, and the drag rating on all models is lower than that of the Penn Squall II series. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Is the 30 the replacement for the 330gti ? And do you recommend the 30 for lead core line trolling umbrella Riggs  and tube and worm?
1 Answer
Yes, these reels were designed to be the next up from the GTI series. As far as your trolling  application, the 50 size would work better for umbrella rigs/tube and worm on leadcore line.

I see you sell a combo, but I already own the reel. What would be a good rod for trolling mojos for stripers? Thanks.

The tsunami trophy boat casting rods and the Shimano Trevala casting rods would be great choices. Look up 6'6'' range and MH power.

is it good enough for tuna and mahi mahi in the pacific?

Does this reel suitable for trolling some wahoos? Nd tuna fishing..
1 Answer
While this reel can handle wahoo and tuna we do not recommend level wind reels for this application. I would strongly consider the Squall LD series in the 60 size for wahoo and tuna trolling. See the link below for this reel http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-sql60ld-squall-lever-drag-reel.html If you have any questions on this or any other reels please feel free to contact our product specialist. would these reels be suited for cod/halibut fishing in Norway? and which model do you suggest?
1 Answer
Yes and no. They have plenty of line capacity to get the job done, but the gear ratio may not be the best. You might want to look at a two speed reel. They will give you the torque needed to lift the big boys off the bottom in deep and fast water.
