Building upon the foundation set by the successful first generation, the Penn Squall II Level Wind Conventional Reels add key performance enhancing features for success in any fishery. New to the Squall II is Penn's Fast Gear Access Sideplate. The Fast Gear Access Sideplate makes self-servicing a more realistic option for many anglers, meaning less time being sent away for servicing and more time out on the water. Featuring a high-strength marine grade bronze alloy main gear and stainless steel pinion gear, the Squall II offers a smooth retrieve with enough winding power to winch even the toughest bottom dwellers up from the depths. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag system offers impressive fish stopping power even in the smaller sized reels, and will retain its power for many more seasons than traditional drag systems with felt washers. The lightweight yet rigid graphite frame and sideplate keeps the reel light and comfortable to fish, while remaining strong enough to withstand the rigors of heavy tackle applications.

Features:

  • Fast Gear Access Side Plate
  • 3+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings
  • HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers
  • Lightweight graphite frame and sideplates
  • Forged and machined aluminum spool
  • High-strength marine grade bronze alloy main gear
  • Stainless steel pinion gear
  • Line Capacity Rings

Looking for a reel that won't break the bank, but preforms like it should, this is it! Great and easy to use work horse! I have been pulling stripers out with this reel all season!

Great reel!
June 16, 2022
Great reel without hurting your wallet. So far I have been using a pair of the Squall 30's for stripers this year and they are performing great. Smooth drag and plenty of torque to pull in large fish. Comfortable handle with plenty of line capacity. This is the type of quality that Penn provides.

Great for Chunking from the Surf
May 14, 2022
When chunking with a conventional reel I want heavy mono, and a reel that can hold alot of it.

Was getting great distance casting 50lb Big Game and a 5oz Pyramid sinker and Bunker
chunk.

No backlashes, smooth drag, nice oversized handle.

Pros
  • Line Capacity
Cons
  • Weight

We have one right and one left.
January 29, 2022
My son and I have two of these reels. We have one left and one right and use them for
cod and haddock. We fish in about 250 feet of water and are able to swap rods and
reels as we get tired. It works great

I bottom fish off the Florida Gulf Coast for red snapper, and, grouper.  I use 60 lb. mono on my three old, reliable Penn 340s.  What size Penn Squall II would I need in order to continue using 60 lb. monofilament.?  Thanks for your help!

Im looking to pair the 20 size to a 7 foot Daiwa Beefstick rated for 2-6 oz , is that an ideal pair?
1 Answer
Hi John, I would suggest a rod a little heavier than a Daiwa Beefstick. I would recommmend a TackleDirect Silver Hook Conventional Jigging Rod. Specifically Model: TDSCJ661H; TackleDirect Code: TDA-1435. https://www.tackledirect.com/tackledirect-tdscj661h-silver-hook-conventional-jigging-rod.html. This rod would be great for the Penn Squall II 20LW and would be great for jigging rockfish in Northern California. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Would the 20 size be suitable for party boats for rock fish on NorCal coast and heavier pier fishing? Or maybe even for striper in saltwater?
1 Answer
Hi John, The Penn SQLII20LW Squall II Level Wind Conventional Reel would be great for fishing for rockfish or stripers in Northern California. The strong drag and the lower gear ratio of 4:9:1 make it ideal for a lot of different bottom fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.
