Almost perfect for Striped Bass
November 2, 2021
A few years ago I purchased the Squall 50LD combo for fishing off the coast of NJ for Striped Bass. The reel is great, easy to use and has a very good retrieve speed. I use it mostly for trolling Mojo Rigs, which it is great with. Where the rod falls short is on its use for spoons. It is a little too heavy to see the proper action on the spoon and get the "pump" just right. It has still caught them on the spoon though. Have not caught any 50"/50#'s yet but I have had a few seasons of multiple 40+" bass up to the 40lb mark with no issues.

Small inshore tuna (30lb range) have not been a problem at all. Probably would not recommend to fight a 100lb+ bluefin with the rod or reel but would love the challenge if it ever happens.

The lever drag seems more constant in the drag settings and is easier to set the spread. If you still hear a click or two of line still going out, move the lever a click forward and it stops. With the drag preset, when the fish hits slide the lever close to strike or all the way to strike and have fun.

Great combo for mojo or umbrella rigs, just not the best for spoons.
Pros
  • Lever drag is very easy to use.
  • Reel has plenty of strength for almost all inshore fish.
  • Great retrieve speed.
Cons
  • Clicker not as loud or pronounced as the old Senators but still works and gets your attention.
  • It is a graphite reel, would not trust for bigger and stronger fighters

I've had this for a few years now. I really like it. I've caught tuna and mahi with this setup and it handled both well. Would recommend.

How can you count the number of yards out without a counter?  Is it from incremental marked spool.
1 Answer
The spool comes with gold lines that designate how much line is on the reel.

Would recommend the 40 with the 7' rod or 50 with the 6'6" rod combo for trolling 24oz mojos for stripper and also for drum fishing in the Delaware Bay.
1 Answer
I would recommend using the 40 over the 50.
