SSV6500LL701MH is a workhorse, but don't depend on the rod
September 13, 2019
The 6500LL combo works great, have used it for freshwater cats to pier and surf on the coast. The reel is bulletproof, easy to maintain and the drag is crazy tough. The rod 7'MH worked great too, for about a couple of years.....but a couple of months ago I noticed an insert had popped out of an eye that had cracked. I know the rod is not the expensive part of this combo, probably a throwaway item to Penn. I purchased an ugly stik tiger elite 7' H to replace this rod, but will still spend the $10 or so to get the eye fixed and use the rod as a spare. The blank is good, but just cheap eyes are something to watch out for.

Awesome rod and reel with great action
October 17, 2018
This is a great reel. I have fished numerous times from the shore and have completely dunked this reel several times in the ocean inadvertently. I simply soaked the reel in soapy water to rinse off and this reel has shown no signs of water penetrating. It still works like the day I bought it.
Pros
  • Looks great
  • Excellent rod with great action
  • Durable reel
Cons
  • None really - I got the cork handle and damaged it in a rod holder, but not really a con but my stupid mistake.

The price was right and it was a gift for my son. I was not sure he would take care of it or care about it at all. I did not want to get junk but I was not going to get him a Lami , let alone a a Mojo and VS. This is wonderful. I'm buying one for myself
Pros
  • price
  • reliability
  • smooth
Cons
  • none so far
  • The Jury is out on the rod but so far so good

Good for fluke

Best fluke setup I own. Also good for schoolie fish. Handles them nicely and is powerful enough for a bigger fish. Reel is smooth and has a nice drag.

For small fish is ok
November 22, 2015
I decided to purchase this combo pack after reading other people's review. But I will say this combo is ok if you are only on the small game. I caught a 25" blue and a 22" striper takes forever to get them in. Reel is not smooth and hard to turn for heavy fishes.
Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • For small game only.

I use this rod and reel combo for rockfishing... It does pretty well with 30" and under but def have to work to get a fish bigger than that. It is a very smooth reel has great action. I loaded it up with 30lb braid and haven't had a problem at all.

Im looking for a pole for my husband and thought this would be a good brand to start off with. Which model would you suggest for someone who likes to do some freshwater fishing (crappy fish & bass & catfish) and some occasional inshore fishing (blues & dolphin primarily)? We want to keep it open to expanding to other types of fish in the future. Which rod and which reel?
1 Answers
Crappie fishing usually requires a ultra light rod while you can get away with using a medium heavy rod for a all purpose fishing rod and reel. Something like the SSV3500701ML would be a good bass/crappie rod and reel but going to a inshore setup you would need something more stout like the SSV5500701MH or the SSV7500701H

Yes, that reel will work well for that style of fishing.

I’m looking for a combo that would be ideal for fishing artificial reefs of the coast of the Carolinas; BSB, vermillion and red snapper, triggers, etc. Would the 4500 be ideal for this application?
1 Answers
The ideal size for the application your using the combo for would be the 4500 size reel with the 7' M power rod. Fishing for snappers and triggers you don't need anything larger than the 4500.

What rod and reel size would you recommend for tarpon in the penn brand
1 Answers
We would suggest either the 5500 or 6500 sizes for the Spinfisher V or Slammer III, and the 6000 size for the Clash or Conflict. For rods we would suggest the 7' or 7'6" Medium-Heavy Carnage II Spinning Boat Rods.

I would like to pair a 6500 with the jigging rod for vertical jigging on wrecks off the keys. I would rather pair it with the rampage jigging rod but you don't offer that combo. Thoughts?

If it is a rod and reel combo that you are looking for than SSV6500661JG would be the most ideal combo to fit your application.

I am looking at purchasing 2 rod and reels to be used for casting poppers offshore for Dolphin. The Penn 5500 is what I was leaning toward. Do you have a suggestion for a rod that would combine with that real for that purpose or another reel and rod combo ?

Eric, that combo would not being the ideal for what your doing. I would recommend Staying with the Penn 5500 and maybe try a Tsunami Popping rod TSU-0027
