- MYprofessional opionin GREAT,NO. 1.
All in all a good reel, but truly needs to have a level wind option on at least the 9/0.
This particular one has some serious issues with the star drag mechanism randomly tightening on it's own- to a point it cannot be moved without major effort, &/ or tools, including mid fight. (Huge stressor & not ok on a boat with 20+ other people! Deck hands even had trouble trying to free it up when it would happen, & we all agreed something was significantly not right with this particular individual reel. As it had never been fished, was out of the box & set up professionally 2 days before this trip.)
This issue wound up leaving you with no actual drag & no control or adjustment over it. Also lead to massive backlash troubles randomly when using the significant weight to reach canyon depths. Though less weight caused equal issues with that.
You'd set it, & next thing you know the drag adjust mechanism is overtightened, immovable, & at the same time you have zero drag power allowing the fish or even just the weight & bait to just peel line off the reel with no way to stop or adjust it.
This is NOT a reel you can even *think* of using the "free spool" feature on, ever!
You want epic backlash? That's how you get it.
Thankfully, I knew that when I saw it's design. However, it is something to be aware of.
All in all it's a reel I do like- & when it worked properly, it worked very well.
Plenty of power, easy to handle despite it's size & weight.
It is heavy, but with the right rod it makes a balanced, efficient package for my needs. A great price & TDs customer service was awesome.
I would recommend it to others with the warnings about the drag adjust issues & that it is not, in fact a level wind.
Would I purchase another? Maybe.
A level wind version, definitely.
- Sturdy, well balanced, powerful & a reasonable price point for what it is.
- No level wind (& the largest size really should be!), star drag is glitchy, heavy weight could be an issue in some circumstances.
- Affordable and strong
- It has cranking power when you need it
- Drag
- Line Capacity
- strength
- built like a tank
- Quite heavy
- strong , wide spool, nice drag
- heavy, gear ratio
