The Penn Pursuit III is designed to deliver big fish fighting capabilities at an entry level price point. Most lower priced spinning reels use oiled felt drag washers which simply cannot stand up to the abuse taken from large saltwater fish. Penn has solved this problem by implementing their HT-100 drag material into their opening price point spinning reel. This means that the Pursuit III features the same durable carbon drag found on significantly more expensive reels. This key addition, along with a corrosion resistant graphite body and 5 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, make the Pursuit III the strongest reel in its class.
Penn Pursuit III Features:
- HT-100 carbon fiber drag system
- Lightweight and corrosion resistant graphite body
- 4+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings
- Superline Spool
- CNC folding aluminum handle
- Infinite Anti-Reverse
- Great price and great build material love the rod with metal rings
- No
- - Large line capacity
- - Excellent casting distance
- - Rod has backbone and flex to fight big fish
- - Fast retrieve
- - Not suited for when fish are nibbling. The stiffness of the tip usually run them away after a couple of nibble compare to a softer rod. But hey, I don't think this was made with small fish in mind!
- Best price, great rod and reel
- Free protection fee of $8. Faster shipping...take 2 weeks too long.
- Reel is simple and easy to maintain (I already own another Pursuit). The rod is fiberglass and on the heavy side which is exactly what I wanted because it's durable and will get banged around kayak fishing. Good for a wide range of fish, a desert island setup.
Here's the secret boys and girls; Dont dunk your fishing gear in the ocean. When you are done fishing you must rinse the rod and reel off with fresh water. You should also take the reel apart from time to time and add a spot of grease and few drops of oil here and there. Moving parts will eventually require some maintenance.
It's about $50 for just the reel or for $70 you get the rod with the combo, it's a no brainer. Get the rod just to have extra even if not needed. The rod is slightly stiffer then other medium fast action rods I have, but we fish a lot of structure like docks and bridges and it works great.
Spooled w 20lb braid. My son has been smashing snappers, sheepsheads, and small snook.
- Works as well as my $150 combos for half the price
- You get a rod for $20 basically buying the combo instead of just the reel.
- None for the price
- Durable Rod
- Inexpensive
- Non-durable reel
- Easy to have screws loosen
