Beast of a Rod!!!!!!
January 13, 2021
This rod is a beast. It is extremely strong with very, very, little flex. I bought this rod to "muscle" in and make short work of the GBFT we get in the NE/NJ coast, which for the most part are 100-200 lb fish as 200+ are pretty rare. Since this rod is so stiff, your fishing technique is somewhat different vs using say an 80lb rod which has more flex and is more forgiving. With the 130 lb rod, you need to be conscious to keep the line tight at all times and avoid slack lines as this rod doesn't flex much. This is not a "stand up" rod .... leave it in the rod holder and crank away just like in Wicked Tuna.

I have not used the rod as of yet but can't wait. The rod is great quality and extremely well built with great rollers, great bent butt and a great eglass/fiberglass blank.
Pros
  • Extremely strong, well built, great rollers and bent butt. This rod is capable of catching any GBFT in the NE/NJ coast.
Cons
  • Rod is probably overkill for 90+% of all BFT we get in NE/NJ coast and has little flex so fishing technique will need to change somewhat with this rod. Not a "stand up" rod so leave in rod holder.

I have a pair of Penn International 80 reels. Could you please give me suggestions of what rods to pair them with?
1 Answer
Michael,

To go along with your Penn International 80 reels, the Penn International VI Conventional rod would be a good match. Either model INTVI508060AR (straight butt) or INTVI508060ARBB (bent butt) will pair with your reels.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Dear TD, would a Penn Fathom 2-speed be a good match for the INTVI305060TU rod?

If so, which model?

And would this rod be able to handle 70lbs yellow fin tuna?

Best regards.

1 Answer
This rod would pair well with a Penn Fathom 2speed in a 40 size for your desired trolling application, this set up together would certainly be able to handle that class of fish

Dear Tackledirect, I am from the UK - but I'm over in Florida 4 times a year with work. I always get in a fishing trip in on my mated Centre Consul sports boat. We fish offshore, and fish a mix of boat and trolling. I have just recently bought a Penn Squall30VSW. I'd like to pair her with a Penn rod. On your Youtube channel you did an interview with one of the Penn team @ ICAST 2017. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKC81HN7QGA Can you tell me which rod he was holding? Thanks Andrew
1 Answer
Unfortunately we do not know the exact model of the rod that was in the video. A good rod to pair with the Squall 30 VSW would be the ALLBW308060CRS.
