Conflict is smooth, casts great
September 13, 2019
I think this reel is very smooth, can handle with sufficient drag. It is light. Haven't had any of the problems that others have expressed with it seizing up....has always performed for me on a 8 1/2 foot old school ugly stik custom.

Fished 2 Penn Conflict 3000's side by side with a $49.00 Okuma Stratus 6 in the surf.
The Penns felt like boat anchors and both were seized up the next morning requiring an hour each to tear down and clean. The $49.00 Okuma required only a rinsing and is still going strong after 4 more adventures in the surf. Don't wast your money on the Conflict... my son now has 2 $140.00 catfish reels!!! ***RATING WOULD BE LESS THAN ONE STAR IF THAT WAS AN OPTION***
Pros
  • ???
Cons
  • Heavy? They would be a great deal if you paid for reels by the pound.

Penn Quality

It's a Penn Reel and I've yet to be disappointed by any of the Penn reels that I have. As others have said, smooth drag and feels good on the rod. So far has lived up to the quality I expect from Penn products.
Pros

Good reel for the price

Used it once so far and it's worked flawlessly for stripers. Great drag and solid action with no body flex. We'll see how it holds up in the long run.

The Penn Conflict is an outstanding reel in every respect.

Price wise the Conflict series is between the Battle II series and the much higher priced Slammer series of spinning reels. Action, drag and ruggedness makes the Conflict series a great buy.

Good looking reel for the price
November 25, 2017
The conflict 3000 by Penn is a good looking light weight reel for the cost. It handles well but out of the box the bail needed oil and the internal grease was too dense and caused it to be more difficult to operate than it should be. I stripped the grease out and replaced it with quantum hot sauce grease and it performed in a optimum capacity. It’s a very fast gear ratio and you have to consciously slow yourself down to work smaller jigs and lures properly. I’ve only had it a few weeks so another review should be made after giving it some time to break in and see how it endures some regular use.
Pros
  • Light weight, solid construction.
Cons
  • Gear ratio too high for the type of reel.
  • Original lubes were not the best application.
  • Drag ok but not great.
  • Too soon to review properly.

Haven't had a chance to put on rod and field test yet, but came exactly as advertised and should hold up well if it is like my similar Penn spinning reels.

Replacing two Penn Battle II reels with these and hoping for better results. The Battle II reels both seized up last season even with what I considered proper rinsing, etc.

Fishing for Striper in the N.E. off Cape Cod. These look like they'll work nicely but I'll let you know if I find otherwise.

Could I use this reel for pier based tarpon and vertical jigging for amberjack? Looking at the 8000 spooled with 80-pound braid.
1 Answers
The conflict would do well up against small to medium sized Tarpon and AJ's. If you think that you may be catching tarpon in the 100 lb range I would suggest going with the Penn Slammer III because of the higher max drag and and stronger frame.

I'm interested in the Conflict 5000. Would this go well with Tica Dolphin 10'-6"? I have Tica 9' TC2 with Penn Persuit II 5000. Love it. NO problems at all. Looking for long cast from surf with bait.

A 5000 size would be a good match for a 10'6" rod.

A 7' rod, M - MH action with 15 lb braided line would work best with the Penn Conflict 2500. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.

I have the 9ft 6in whiskerskeeker rod would the 8000 pair up nice with this . Mainly for blues amd flats

The Penn Conflict 6000 would balance out the 9'6'' rod better than the 8000 because of the weight between the 2 reels.

Is this a good trout reel in the smaller sizes? Which size for large trout and/or steelhead? Will use 8-10lb mono and and med light rod 7.5 to 8.5 ft length.

The Penn Conflict 2000 would pair well with a 7 1/2 ft to 8 1/2 ft rod fishing for large trout and steelhead.

I want to put a conflict on the Trevala rod 6' 6 medim action spinning rod. I like the 5000 for the aluminum gear and the metal body? Would the 4000 or 5000 be better? The 5000 has more of the quality I am looking for but because I have not held it I do not know if it would be to heavy for the rod. Its for jigging for cod - sea bass - throwing some sp minnows in the river.
1 Answers
The 4000 might be more comfortable due to the lighter weight but, you will give up line capacity and drag. The 5000 is the way to go.

Hi, I wolder if the 8000 would be fine for 11' MH rod for inshore casting? Thanks
1 Answers
It depends how you are fishing. If you are throwing bait, it would be fine. If you are throwing lures / metals, it will be tiring as it is a large and heavy reel.

Would you recommend the 4000 or 5000 for surf casting, lures only, on an 8' medium-heavy fast action stick? Target: Striped Bass, Blue Fish, Weak Fish etc NJ Coast.
1 Answers
On an 8' rod, I would recommend a Conflict 5000. The Conflict 4000 might be too small to balance comfortably on the rod.

Marshes, inlets, and jetties around South Carolina coast for red drum, sea bass, spot tails, sheeps head, flounder, etc. - which reel do you recommend? How does this compare to the Penn Battle series?
1 Answers
The Conflict is a little lighter and has an extra roller bearing to enhance the smoothness of the reel. The Conflict also offers a heavy drag system between comparable sizes in the Battle series. We would recommend a 5000 or 6000 size reel for 7 to 8 foot rods. If you are looking for an 9 to 10 ft rod the 6000 to 8000 size reel would be best for that combination depending on the the weight and ratings of the rod.

Hi What kinda setup or combo would you guys offer with a penn conflict 8000 reel?? I'm very much interested in the conflict 8000 but I need a rod to match it say 6" or so. Can I use it for salt water deep sea fishing, I mean catching groupers, tuna and so on?
1 Answers
We currently do not offer the Penn Conflict in a pre built combination. However, we do have rods that would match up with that reel with the backbone you are looking for. Check out Penn's Bluewater Carnage Jigging rods. They are available in sizes ranging from 5'6" to 7'. The shorter rods would be able to handle heavier fighting fish.

Either the 3000 or 4000 Penn Conflict would work great on a 6 to 7ft medium to medium heavy rod.
