Similar to the battle series. Feels like a quality metal reel. Would use for freshwater. Clean it off after if you use at the beach.

Versatility and Quality CLASH5000
November 18, 2021
This Reel is a reliable workhorse, that can be fished in many ways, and can take the pounding the mighty pacific ocean dishes out.

I fish this reel off of boats for rockfish and lingcod and it has the line capacity to fish deeper reef, and the saltwater spray has not effected it yet (bought 4 years ago). I also fish cut bait for big rays and sharks and this reel has the power to stop em', and the line capacity for runners. I handle rays in the 50-60lb pound rang with ease. I can also get out on the rocks and not worry about the conditions when using my clash.

The thing just won't die, 100% worth my money.
Pros
  • Durability
  • Line capacity
  • Versatility
  • Strength
Cons
  • Wish there was a power knob

Amazing reel

I’ve put this 4k size reel through torture basically and it still kicks butt. From 12+ Lb bluefish to 30lb Striper and numerous runoffs from tarpon in Florida, it still works. The tarpon burned up the drag a little but some penn grease helped that
Pros
  • Quality built

I've been fishing various Penns for years now. Mostly older spinfishers and the battle 2. But this clash is nice. Decided to jump on the deal and give it a try. Definitely the smoothest Penn I've ever used. Quality drag that you expect from Penn. Overall a solid reel
Pros
  • Well built, good drag, smooth

Ordered the awesome PENN CLASH 4000, called the next day to add a spool full of braid and to my delight it was already shipped!! Not only is that awesome, the reel IS SO NICE. It looks so good,, really something to look at ,all the weight saving cuts and carbon fiber accent the classic penn gold. Looks awesome and the performance as good and better than you could expect. Extra smooth drag plenty of stopping power and those CNC'ed gears are so smooth and strong. It has done the trick on Pompano and redfish so far. And they have been upper slot red's. Reel will work for many applications ordering another 2 for bait rods!!! Awesome purchase from TACKLE DIRECT and A STAPLE BRAND LIKE PENN
Pros
  • Looks
  • Light
  • Smooth and strong drag
  • Cnc 'ed gears are tight and smooth
Cons
  • None for me

Great Spinning Reel for the Money
January 9, 2020
I have been using this reel in the surf since Penn introduced a couple of years ago, putting it on a 10 foot GSB. I have tamed teen size bluefish with a drag that is smooth. It has stood up to sand and surf and has not failed me yet. It holds a fair amount of 30 or 40 lbs power pro. I liked it so much I got a second one to put on a 11 foot GSB. I highly recommend this reel for both 10 and 11 foot rods.
Pros
  • It is light and strong, holds a fair amount of 30 or 40 pound braid, and the drag is super smooth.
Cons
  • None yet!

Would this be a good reel for tiger fish on rivers like the Zambezi in Zambia?
1 Answer
Hi Paul, The Penn CLA4000 Clash Spinning Reel is discontinued and unavailable to order at this time. However, I would recommend a Penn Spinfisher VI SSVI4500 Spinning Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-spinfisher-vi-ssvi4500-spinning-reel.html This would be ideal for your fishing application. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Would this reel pair  well with a tackle-direct TDSS702MH silver hook spinning rod for fluke h fishing and other similar jig fishing form the surf or boat.
1 Answer
Hi Marcus, The Penn CLA4000 Clash Spinning Reel would pair fine with the TDSS702MH silver hook spinning rod. However, since it is currently sold out I would also recommend the Penn Spinfisher VI SSVI3500 Spinning Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-spinfisher-vi-ssvi3500-spinning-reel.html This reel would also pair great and be a very durable saltwater reel with the internal seals that could be used for various saltwater fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

would you recommend this for a st. croix mojo 8ft. for albies or a smaller reel?
1 Answer
This reel and a St.Croix Mojo Salt 8' would be a perfect pair. I would not recommend going any smaller in reel size.

Would the CLA4000 be a good fit for a 9' St. Croix Mojo Surf rod for throwing plugs at the beach and on the bay? Trying to keep the outfit light weight for all day fishing this style.
1 Answer
That would be an appropriate combination. The 4000 is the smallest size that I would recommend pairing with a 9 foot rod.

Is the 4000 Clash a good match for the 9' 6" Air Wave Elite used as a plugging setup or would the 5000 model be a better choice? PS, I am a senior citizen and fish the local beaches of AC & Brig. Thank you, JW
1 Answer
I would personally go with the 5000 because I think that it would be a better fit with a rod that long. When I am fishing Brigantine and Atlantic City, I usually use a Penn Spinfisher SSV 4500 on a 9ft surf rod and that balances very well, so I think that the 5000 would be great on your 9'6".
