Penn Ally Boat Rods are constructed with a one-piece tubular glass blank and a solid tip to help prevent breakage. For line management Penn has added Fuji stainless steel guides with aluminum oxide inserts. Standup models feature both Fuji guides and Pac Bay rollers. For added comfort, Ally rods feature PENN?s Triangular-shaped EVA Torque foregrip to reduce rod rotation while under pressure. Heavy duty graphite and machined aluminum reel seats keep a secure grip on the reel, while an aluminum gimbal provides added strength and a secure connection during the fight.

Penn Ally Review
September 7, 2017
I purchased two of the Penn Ally rods recently for a Long Range Tuna Trip out of San Diego CA. It was a good move having these rods ready for the Big Bluefin Tuna action. These rods worded perfect for landing these large Tuna in the 100-200 pound range, with plenty of action and enough stamina to get them boat side quickly while coupled to a quality reel. The grips and butt length are perfect for belt or rail fishing, comfortable for the long fight. The grip and rod combination support larger reel well, for this outing I fitted one of my 25 size reels when attached to these rods had good balance.

Pros
  • Good, quality and finish. Grips are perfect. The rollers seem durable and are smooth, the clearance is tight so braid is not a problem. The guides are perfectly aligned. The weight of these rods is excellent, light yet powerful.
Cons
  • I would like to see this Ally rod in a 6'6" length.

Sensative
May 1, 2016
Used on a 50w and the tip is still sensative enough to feel anything on the other end of the line
Pros
  • Sensativity and feel in hand
Cons
  • For being a 50-100 i would think its to flexible for anything bigger than a 50w

Would this be a good rod for big bluefin tuna out in San Diego? If so which one? I'd be using 30VISW.
1 Answer
Yes it would be a good trolling rod and the 30-80 pound rated rod would be good for mid-large size Tuna.
