Classic USA Products And Service!
January 9, 2021
Hello TD people,

I have received my Penn 704Z spinning reel, which I ordered from you, loaded with power pro maxquatro 50 pound test braid in moss green.

I am very pleased with the reel, but I am more impressed with Tackle Direct's customer service!

The careful, thorough explanation of your line to spool winding process is, to me, at least, FAR above and beyond the call...including photos of the machines used in the procedure?

THAT is classic American service to go along with my new, AMERICAN MADE, classic spinning reel! Awesome!

Thank you,
Scott W..
Pros
  • Reel is rock solid. Beautiful workmanship.
  • Customer service is world class!
Cons
  • None!

Simple, rugged, reliable, and functional! These reels are amazing. If only they had a couple of smaller models like the 714z and 712z. I would buy a half dozen in a minute!
Pros
  • If you know about these reels, then you know!
Cons
  • Only two sizes available

Strong Reel

I’ve had this reel for a good second now and I’ve been able to bring in huge fish with ease even a few tarpon. I have doubts that the max drag is 15 pounds it doesn’t make any sense lol
Pros
  • Strength
  • Reliability
Cons
  • Heavyness

A classic in the surf fishing world

The amount of line this thing can hold with its simplicity to service on yourself. You really can’t beat the nostalgia ot brings back from the fall run back in the 80s yeeew

Amazing in it's price range. And Tackle Direct is considerably easier to get gear from than the snobs in some of the local tackle shops.

Most consider it a poor man's Van Staal. I wouldn't purposely dunk it, but I've had to on occasion. ( I underestimated the depth of the water during a short walk between rocks.) A little preventative maintenance is all you really need, along with possibly a bi yearly degreasing' cleaning and re-greasing of the cavity. It's a great first bailess reel for someone learning the technique. It pairs great with a rod from 9 to 11 feet. And is not so heavy to make it a real wrist killer. Most of my fishing situations require a lot of power to turn a fish from deep heavy currents. I've had no problems in it's first few sessions in the surf, jettisoned or canals in the Northeast.

Just don't try swimming with it.

Pros
  • Price point is good. Weight is ok.
Cons
  • Comes under greased from the factory. Needs instant modification if you plan on having it last.

Oh my God it's finally back.

When they discontinued this reel i had a fit. I have an older one and this thing is a time proven work of art.
Pros
  • still have my 2 older ones fro 10+ years ago. Require no maintenance. just keep on going. Sand, no problem. Dirt? no problem. Saltwater? no problem.
Cons
  • wish it was as cheap as the older models, but the must have updated it.

Welcome Back!
July 1, 2016
Well! Well! Look who the cat dragged in! A blast from the past has returned (by popular demand) to the surf fishing scene. Penn recently has re-introduced the 704Z AND 706Z. And I for one. just had to have it in my most modest collection. Upon arrival, took it out for some light bass fishing and had some minor success. The Penn functioned perfectly and completed the job it was designed for. This test was only an introduction to the reel and not a torture test. Only time (and use) will prove the longevity of the 706Z. As for now...All I can say is...I really like it!
Pros
  • (1) Reasonable price. (2) Brass and stainless steel worm gear drive. (3) Modern metallurgy, mostly metal construction. (4) Simple repair and maintenance. Great Penn Service. Please Note: I am just a simple fisherman, that no one ever heard of. No gain for me in anyway for statements made.
Cons
  • (1) This following is not really a Con...Use this reel for what it was made for. Forget 600 pound Groupers. Like Dirty Harry once said. "Every man must know his limitations..." And every reel has it's limitations. This is one of those reels. Enjoy and use it for what it was made for. (2) The finish on the reel could stand some improvement. At least mine could...

The 706 is a tried and true spinning reel. Maintenance is as simple as anyone can hope for. I have this spooled with 40# powerpro, on a 10.6 St Croix Legend, and it casts a mile. Priced perfectly and delivered quick.
Pros
  • Maintenance, price point
Cons
  • A little grinding on spool edge when dunked in sandy water
